Log-in issue...

Sep 6, 2006 12:07PM PDT

If I log into the forums, be through the universal login or forum login methods, Cnet recognizes me as I travel throught the forums, product reviews, etc as it should. However, when I go to download.com I am not recognized and am asked to log in. It used to be that download.com would automatically recognize me after having logged into cnet.com. What happened?

Must have been a Glitch at the time

John, just tried it to test it. No problem at all.
Could go anywhere and download or view everything.
Glitch at that time?

Difficult to explain- but once you login to download.com
Sep 7, 2006 6:04AM PDT

it will remember you next time.

Now go to CNET news.com... you'll have to login there too...

Short and sweet explanation... the Universal login--isn't so universal Sad at least for the time being. Put it this way John--CNET.com, CNET shopper, and CNET reviews use the same universal login component. CNET download.com uses another instance of the universal login, same goes for CNET News.com. That's why when you visit the different CNET sites you have to login to them separately. This is a bad experience for users and we are working to correct this...

Why not just do it already, you ask? Well on paper it looks and sounds easy enough, but like many things on the back end--it's much more complicated than just flipping switch.

Anyways I hope this didn't confuse things even further and explains it a bit more...

Figures...

I know some time ago it worked, but that was before the techs had to shut down and patch the registration database a couple of times. I just now noticed it because I rarely delete my Cnet cookies, but was doing a little experiment, the kind that usually gives Adam and the others fits. Just glad I didn't break that one too. Happy
