take a note of the time and check your Event Viewer to see if there are any clues.
The Event Viewer can be accessed by going to Start > Run, type in eventvwr.msc then click OK. In the Event Viewer window look at the events under Applications and System for any event at the same time as the lock up. They may have either an exclamation mark for a warning or a cross for an error. If you see any, highlight the entry, right click it and select Properties for more information.
Are there any clues you can give to what you were doing just prior to the lock up, eg using a specific program or application, surfing the internet, or downloading files?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here would have any idea what might cause something like this. I have XP SP2. This only started happening about 2 months ago, and I've regularly run virus/spyware scans and defrag often as well. Here's what's happening: When you click turn off, then the screen comes up "saving settings, etc, then when it gets to the "Windows Is Shutting Down" screen, it locks up and I have to reset to start it again, then turn it off again. Weird thing is, it doesn't happen every time I shut down, and when it does lock and I have to reset, it does shut down properly every time then.I appraciate any input.
