Question

Locked out of my laptop and can't connect to wifi

Dec 31, 2014 3:11PM PST

I am no longer the admin of my own computer and whenever I want to connect to a wifi network, I can't see any other wifi from my laptop but I can see it from my phone and other devices. It just doesn't appear at all so I got no network to connect to. So I tried to reset my laptop since I already backed up everything and I am not an admin anymore?? I can't install anything without permission, even when I want to click on "open system restore" I need permission. A box will appear and I have to type in a username and password which Idk and don't have. Then at the bottom of the box, it says "Domain:RP". HELP I'm freaking out

I never needed a userid or password to reinstall Windows from the installation CD or recovery media.

This story, by the way, shows how useful it is to have 2 user accounts with administrative capabilities. When your regular one doesn't work anymore, you just use the spare one. An idea to keep in mind when you're up and running again.

Check and verify

You gave no info of what your PC is, thus details matter. I suggest you look and see if there is some "wifi switch" either physical or s/w based is "enabled/ON". Wifi can fail as to an int. wifi card got disconnected or done-in(bad). I would do that to get the basics out of the way.

If you had recent use of the wifi, just what has happened since then? New s/w, moved, lost ISP, major updates or upgrades, possible infection, check into all that. You can TRY!!! if you like to return to a date before any of this happened. Use the OS restore feature and pick a restore point at a time when all worked before. Do this after checking everything else and only if you really, really, really want to.

As for admin setting, you can blank it out using NTPASSWORD pgm.. Google for it and d/l it and run it after your burn disc or have a working pgm. Boot from it and reset or zero-out any admin password. Once done, you can after a proper full boot, re-enter a password or just leave it blank.
