Locked out of MS Word 2003

by draven_dx / March 19, 2007 3:41 PM PDT

My sister tried to use her Microsoft Word today and every existing file she tried to open (.doc) is asking for a password. She's only password protected one file on her computer and when she tries to use it, it still won't let her in. I have heard of this problem with other people, but have never had it happen to me, personally. I've done Google searches to try to find the remedy, but to no avail. Usually, I can get this all sorted out on my own, but this one really has me stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ask her to mail you such an old document (as attachment), so you can see if the document really have gotten a password or it's just Word asking for passwords on documents without. That are different things, and they might need different solutions.

Also let her create a NEW document and send that to you.

I should have mentioned in my original post that when she tries to create a new one, it will let her create the new one, but it requires a password for her to save it. Also, I have no problems opening any of her documents, it's just like someone has installed a password on the program on her computer, but I've never heard of this happening before.

From memory there is no password option on RTF files.

Would the best bet just be to either reinstall the Micrsoft Works program or update it to a newer version and see if that helps then?

Works may not have Word.

These can be different products and can be incompatible.

Only you can tell us what you are using.

She's using MS Word 03 and I have the capability to update it to 07. It should still be okay. They both are formatted for doc files. Am I correct in this matter?

Correct but not the answer.

Since you have Works and she has Word 2003 I can't tell if they are compatible.

Best of luck sorting this out since I must wait till you tell the answer.

In reply to: Re: locked out of Word

- find and delete normal.dot (the default template)
- if it also happens in another user account
- system restore back to the day before yesterday

You'd better not have mentioned MS Works. That caused a totally irrelevant discussion.

Hope this helps.
