Question

Locked out of computer after latest windows 10 update.

Jul 10, 2019 11:58PM PDT

Hey all, I have a problem that I have not been able to find a solution to yet. Locked out of my computer after last night's Windows 10 update. I use a fingerprint scanner to access it, and it is now asking for a PIN. I don't think I ever set up a PIN and if I did, none of the ones I use are working. There is also a password option, with the hint "the usual." None of my "usual" passwords work either. Since I'm stuck on the lock screen, there's really not much I can do to move this along. I guess that I must have made a Microsoft account when I got this computer seven years ago? I have no idea what email was used so haven't been able to use the password recovery option. Computer is a HP ENVY m4.
Help? Please? Thanks!

My next step

Would be to get in with my spare, NOT AN EMAIL BASED but local login.

Windows since NT or XP does not require a backup local admin account but it's a very good idea for days like this.

After the fact? Sure, use the old utilman.exee trick. Kind of a shock to folk that thought a fingerprint login made their PC secure (nope, it is not.)

Read how at https://www.howtogeek.com/222262/how-to-reset-your-forgotten-password-in-windows-10/

Mind you that we use the ENTIRE article about creating a new Admin account if you (most do forget to) didn't create one. We can do this without any W10 DVD or USB.

Thanks for the reply, I certainly appreciate it! But I still can't get past the lock screen so I couldn't make any of this happen.

Then the harder method.

"First, start by booting your Windows 10 installation into the setup by changing the boot order in your BIOS to take priority with the CD, or use the ISO as a startup disk instead."

If you can't do this, then you can't reinstall Windows either. I worry here.

Thanks for responding, that's good to know for future reference! I took my computer to the Microsoft store and they fixed it so I can get into it now! Yay!
