You have the wrong boot diskette. Go get the XP boot diskette set from http://www.bootdisk.com and then you might see screens like http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPPro/installxppro1.htm
But let me state that a machine that can't boot the XP CD should most likely NOT run XP. Repairs to the OS will be nearly impossible without a functional CD boot.
Yes, I'm writing you shouldn't do this.
Bob
I need help loading Windows XP home on a surplus box I bought recently. The computer is a Gateway GP7-500 with no OS on it. I was able to boot it with a Win 98se boot disk. I could not get my bootable WinXP OS disk to completely load. I am currently at the A:> prompt and am stuck.
Steps I have taken:
1. Booted, started, got to A:>
2. entered format C:
3. formatted entire HD
4. went to BIOS
5. changed boot device 1 to CD
6. put WinXP home bootable cd into cd (note: this disk has successfully allowed me to load OS on 2 other boxes)
7. It recognized the disk and began the process of loading the OS
8. IT BOMBED. Error as follows:File\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7.
9. Went back to bios and defaulted boot disk to removable which I assume is the floppy because that was the original default
10. Put boot floppy back in
11. <cont> <alt> <del>
12. A:> Where I am at now
Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!!!
Here is the link to Gateway to see what the original configuration was on the box. I am using my own mouse, keyboard, and monitor.
