LN52A650 - InfoLink Will Not Work as Advertised.

Jul 5, 2008 11:26PM PDT

InfoLink Will Not Work as Advertised.

Samsung claims it?s new InfoLink? RSS, on Series 6 and Series 7 LCD and Plasma HDTVs, provides content directly from USA TODAY when users connect their Samsung Series 6 or Series 7 LCD and Plasma HDTV to the Internet via the integrated Ethernet port. ?????IT DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT AN EXPENSIVE ADD-ON. Samsung will not provide the add-on or refund.

No, you've just about hit all the content you're going to get from your A650. Unless they make some sort of update down the road. Just news, stocks, weather. Youtube would be cool but that's a whole other animal. I understand that Tivo now allows access to Youtube.

Link Stick and WEP password
Nov 28, 2008 11:59AM PST

I received a free Link Stick from Samsung today, much to my surprise. I've gotten my television to recognize my wireless network, but I can't enter the correct WEP password because the keyboard that the TV displays only shows a few letters. What's up with that?

my link stick works
Nov 29, 2008 12:53AM PST

I ended up using my link stick for the first time yesterday. Converted from an ethernet cable (now connected to my samsung 1500 bluray) and connected my 52A650 to the link stick. It got hooked up without a hitch. My network is encrypted also and the keyboard displayed allowed me to toggle between letters and numbers....not sure why you're having problems. It was pretty much plug and play for me.

My password contains letters that the keyboard doesn't show. Do you have the full keyboard there?

Use the numbers/letters on your remote and you should be good to go. try it and let me know.

The keyboard on the screen only shows A through F, and there's no keyboard on the remote, only a number pad.

If you have alpha characters in your security code, I would suggest giving Samsung a call. Their customer service should be able to walk you through whatever issues you are having.

Are you sure it's WEP?
Dec 1, 2008 12:53AM PST

WEP's protocol only allows numbers and A-F characters.

Perhaps you're using WPA? WPA does support the full keyboard, and is also user changable. (WEP sets it for you 0-9, A-F).

If that's the case, you can adjust your WPA to numbers and letters within the scope of 0-9 and A-F manually, and then adjust your settings that way.

Keep me posted.

Well, thanks for clarifying. I use WEP so that's why my setup was so easy.

WEP or WPA2
Jan 4, 2009 7:41AM PST

I am trying to get WPA2 to work on my LN40750. It recognizes my network but doesn't let me login with my password on an apple extreme network.

What's the point?
Dec 11, 2008 2:58AM PST

The WPA security is more secure because it offers more letter/number combinations. You are telling me you support WPA security, but only if it is using the same digits as WEP? If you are going to support it, why aren't you supporting it correctly?

linkstick
Dec 11, 2008 3:03AM PST

I had no issues when I was using an ethernet. I just hooked up the linkstick and after entering security code for my home network, it worked fine. I am finding that whenever I leave it set to "wireless" and turn the set back on, it defaults to wired internet and I have to set up the wireless setup again. This happens all the time. I really don't want to have to use the ethernet cable for the tv since it's currently being used for my samsung blu ray. What's going on?

Samsung 650 with infolink
Feb 8, 2009 10:25PM PST

I just installed the infolink wireless adapter. Like many others I have a problem with it not passing the Gateway ping. I did finally manage to get it working last night. However, this morning when I turned on the TV it had changed from wireless to cable and I do not have an ethernet cable to connect in the room where the TV is located. I have worked with it all morning and when I was about to give up it started working. I don't get it. I have two laptops on my wireless network (Linksys G broadband router WRT54G , I have my PS3 connected wirelessly and my PSP. I am missing something, if anyone has any ideas, please post them.
Thanks,

I had this same issue. I called Samsung and they are sending me a new linkstick. They claim the issue is with the linkstick.

wep password
Feb 7, 2009 10:52PM PST

If you are using wep security the only letters you are allowed to use are A-F and numbers. You must be using WPA security where you can enter any letter or number.

thanks for the reply
Feb 9, 2009 12:45AM PST

Xman,

I went back and checked and I am not using WEP security, that feature is disabled. One thing I have not been able to do was to get the TV to pass the network Gateway ping. Just now, I retested about 4 times, one right after the other and surprisingly it passed the 4th time. Once it did everything began working as advertised. However, as soon as I turn off the TV, it reverts to cable and I have to go through the whole thing again. Any ideas.

problems
Feb 9, 2009 12:58AM PST

I've had the same problem. The minute you shut the tv off, it reverts back to cable connection and no longer wireless. I've called Samsung and they claim it's a defective linkstick. I doubt it. I think it's a software glitch that they are not fessing up to. My suggestion is to call Samsung and see what they tell you.

It's working
Feb 9, 2009 2:44AM PST

It always bothers me when I fix something without knowing exactly what I did that fixed it. When I now do the network test, it passes all 4 of the checks including the gateway ping. I have now turned it off and on several times and it is not reverting back to cable, but I really didnt change anything, it's weird. I did call Best Buy where I purchased the TV and after some research they said I should install the updated firmware, I downloaded it but when I connected the USB memory stick with the file, the TV said the version I was about to install was the same version currently on the TV, so I am back to where I was, except it is working, but I don't know what I did to fix it.

frustrating
Feb 9, 2009 2:52AM PST

That is frustrating. I'm on the phone with Samsung now and they will be replacing my linkstick since it's still under warranty. The amazing part is that they have absoltely no transactions noted under my profile and I've called at leat a half dozen times since I got the tv 5/08. At least the rep understood my position and was willing to replace the item for me. I personally don't think they have great customer service which is a shame.

Feb 9, 2009 3:10AM PST

It is working, it's not working, geees, this has been a pain in the butt. I think I am going to order another wireless adapter and try it before I return the one I just received. I suppose it could be an intermitent failure on the adapter. I purchased my adapter from amazon.com , please let me know once you get your new one if it takes care of your problem, and I will do the same.

linkstick not saving password
Jan 20, 2010 2:13AM PST

I just set up the linkstick with my samsung blue ray, but every time I turn the unit off, it fails to remember the password. Obviously, I'm not doing something right. After I enter the password and connect, I go back to the previous "access point" screen., scroll down, and save. What am I doing wrong??

What additional item
Apr 22, 2009 10:43PM PDT

I read your post. What expensive additional item are you saying you need in order for it to work. The wireless adapter, I think it's called "INFOLINK" which is a wireless usb adapter that connects to the usb port on the TV. There is nothing other than that, of course you will have to have a wireless system functioning in your home, if not then you would have to buy a wireless router. I purchased the adapter and as advertised plugged it in and it worked (some of the time). When it did work it was great. I think my wireless adapter was defective, everytime I would turn off the TV the settings would return to Cable instead of wireless and it required resetting everything all over again. For some reason my work intermitently. I have not purchased another one, but will probably do so at some point in the future.

Same problem
May 1, 2009 1:21AM PDT

I have the wis-08bg2x attached to my LN40A650 & have the same intermittent problems. I have it set up with WAP to my Westell 327 modem & it intermittently reverts back to WIRED from WIRELESS. It does this after I turn the set off, but not every time. My modes also often change to SHOP MODE after the TV is turned off.

I have spoken to numerous indiviuals at 1-800-SAMSUNG who haven't helped much. They set up a service call for a company 70 miles away to come check it out. The SAMSUNG suthorized repair company didn't even understand my problem over the phone. They said that they could pick it up in 2 weeks and bring it to their office to troubleshoot. They also mentioned that they have had no training whatsoever on the LINKSTICK and didn't know if they could help with the matter. If they could fix it, I would be looking at 4 weeks without the TV & or with it fixed.

After I called SAMSUNG back & explained it to them, they hung up on me. Great customer service.

Same problem

Hookem Horns,

I'm sorry you had a rough experience. Let me see if I can shed some light on this.

If your television keeps reverting to Shop Mode, it may be because you're not taking out of Shop Mode - which may also have to do with your settings on the Wireless LinkStick.

That said, the service technicians aren't necessarily equipped to hook up the wireless features, since some networks are very difficult, with different modes, different security levels, settings that may be specific to one wireless router, and not on another.

What have you done to get the television out of shop mode. If you can tell me what you've done, perhaps I can point you in the right direction. I can't promise to solve it, but I'll give it a try if you'd like.

Hookem Horns,

Good. That's likely the culprit. Now your settings should stay where you set them after that.

InfoLink
May 10, 2013 4:54AM PDT

I know this is an old post but I came across it by accident. You don't need an expensive add on. All you need to do is run an ethernet cable from your router to the ethernet jack on rear of Samsung LN52A650. You could run ethernet cable directly from cable modem to rear of TV but chances are that your TV won't be the only thing on your local network so you will need to do run ethernet from router to rear of TV. I have this exact model TV since 2009 and enjoy it. No problems so far (knocking on wood.....lol). Seriously, probably the other one are also, but for sure the Samsung LN650A series have great picture quality.
P.S. The remote on this particular model (LN52A650) is a little annoying at times but it works okay. One more thing....the audio from TV itself isn't great but then again, who buys a TV in this category and doesn't want to hook it to a nice home theatre system with surround sound?
