LN52A650 - InfoLink Will Not Work as Advertised.

Jul 5, 2008 11:26PM PDT

InfoLink Will Not Work as Advertised.

Samsung claims it?s new InfoLink? RSS, on Series 6 and Series 7 LCD and Plasma HDTVs, provides content directly from USA TODAY when users connect their Samsung Series 6 or Series 7 LCD and Plasma HDTV to the Internet via the integrated Ethernet port. ?????IT DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT AN EXPENSIVE ADD-ON. Samsung will not provide the add-on or refund.

Another option - Ethernet over Electric lines
Aug 27, 2008 3:27AM PDT

Despite the fact that you can't spell to save your life you are right when you suggest just running a 50' cat 5. Another option is to pony up and buy the adapters that run via your electrical wires already in the walls.

1. For those of us that are not Network Managers, IT professionals or teenage Geek Squad employees there is this nifty little feature called "spell check". My computer even has cool red lines that underline my spelling errors! Wow... technology is amazing isn't it.

2. If a company sells a product that says to do something and it doesn't well that would either be false advertising or indicate a flaw in the designe or production of said product. If the product that I produce fails to live up to the specifications I advertise... guess what... I'm out of a J.O.B.

back-handed advice

... "you spent more than 5 hours of your time typing, calling, reading and how much money do you think your time was worth?"

INTERSESTING COMMENT YOU MADE, CONSIDERING YOU WASTED ALL YOUR TIME READING "ALL THOSE BLOGS".

HOW PATHETIC ARE YOU THAT YOU WOULD POST A COMMENT LIKE THAT ? DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL SUPERIOR TO OTHERS ?

DID IT EVER OCCUR TO YOU THAT, PERHAPS, THOSE "dopes" and "lazy bums" WERE TRYING TO HELP SOMEONE?

DID IT EVER OCCUR TO YOU THAT YOU SHOULD FEEL BLESSED, RATHER THAN ANGRY, THAT YOU ARE SO SUPERIOR TO OTHERS ?

Are you really suggesting that people who spend thousands of dollars on a television that promises "wireless" connectivity string a 50 foot patch cable across their living rooms? I have been a Network Engineer for 15 years and I can only assume that if you are a Network Engineer that you are currently unemployed. In the simplest of terms, if you connect the TV using a wired or wireless adapter that is not using encryption to a Router, DHCP should issue an address to the device and you should be good to go. This is not rocket science or in your case, 7th grade science. The problem most people run into is when you add encryption or your router is doing MAC authentication. Basic Wireless connections work out of the box for Laptops and the TV should be no different.

I have seen my fair share of inaccurate explanations as to why pings don?t work on this site. So lets run through some basics:

1) Everything needs TCP/IP to communicate. This is the basic protocol for network communication

2) For PINGS to work properly, ICMP must be enabled. ICMP is a protocol that is an extension of IP. It uses concepts known as ECHO and ECHO reply, which is the equivalent of the TV saying "Hey Router are you there?" and the router replying "Yes, I am here". Echo and Echo Reply.

3) The reason ICMP is turned off on many routers/switches/firewalls is that ICMP had been commonly exploited by viruses. I think most of us have heard of a DOS (Denial Of Service) attack where a virus uses ICMP to flood the network essentially slowing traffic to a halt.

4) If you cant ping the gateway, Make sure there is a Gateway address present first before you start troubleshooting ICMP. Make certain that you have a valid IP address, subnet mask and gateway before you do anything.

5) If you don?t have an IP address listed, start there. Check your router, make sure DHCP is enabled, If MAC authentication is enabled, either enter the MAC of your TV or disable it. Try adding a STATIC address in the range of your network. To figure out what is available, you can check your router to see what addresses have been issued or from your PC, go to a Command prompt and type IPCONFIG. Write down the subnet mask and gateway of your computer. Also take note of the IP address and do the following. If your IP address is 192.168.1.2, increment the last octet by 1 and try pinging. For example PING 192.168.1.3 and then .4, as soon as you find an address the shows "Request Timed Out", most likely that address is not is use. Make note of that address and use it for your TV. You can also get the DNS server by typing IPCONFIG/ALL as well.

I purchased the linkstick and got it to work but it took me a few shots at it. The problem I find now is that the TV keeps reverting back to "Network" instead of "Wireless" each time I turn he TV off. I then have to change the settings and re-enter the password. It is a bit of a pain in the neck. Does anyone know if there is a firmware upgrade to correct this?

I have the same problem -- the tv reverts to NETWORK once you shut it down. What a pain! Hopefully, can provide info on a related firmware update.

useless
Aug 12, 2008 6:37AM PDT

This whole service seems pretty useless to me. I hooked it up (hardwire) and it's a joke at best. Nothing to write home about, and definitely nothing to be upset about if it doesn't work.

WIS08BG Wireless USB Adapter
Aug 4, 2008 11:17AM PDT

Can anyone tell me where I can find one of these adapters for my LN46A650? I can find it on the SAMSUNG website but not how to buy one. I also tried locally at Best Buy & Circuit City as well as both of their websites with no luck...I'd appreciate a point in the right direction.

Samsung sent me a link stick
Aug 21, 2008 10:53PM PDT

A few months after I registered my LN52A650, Samsung sent me a free link stick. I didn't know it was coming. I was mounting the tv on the wall so I ran not only electric there but also ethernet behind the tv. With an ethernet hard-wire connection the infolink works fine so I'll never have a need for this FREE linkstick. Didn't anyone else get a free linkstick from Samsung?

Just received link stick today. Set is already hardwired like yours. I think it's a nice gesture from Samsung, but as you say, it's useless.

The funny part is my LCD screen was defective and I ended up returning it to PC Richard last week. No hassles. I just re-registered my new Samsung today so I'm sure I'll be receiving yet another link stick in a few months. Yet another box which will be collecting dust. Perhaps, I'll put in on Ebay???

I would love a free LS - I have not registered my TV yet - of course I wanted the Media live device but after trying an HP Media Smart I might rethink that move.

InfoLink WiFi Adapter not worth the installation
Aug 26, 2008 10:08AM PDT

I received my InfoLink (LinkStick) WiFi Adapter two day ago - About 3 months after buying the LN40A650 TV. I tried for an hours to link it ot my Belkin N router and waited until today to try again. This time I finally got it work with my WiFi. Then the instruction book just said "just push the I.Link button on your remote to begin accessing content". My remote had no "ILink" button. I finally found a INFO.L button that worked. It seems to me that you can only get three useless bits of information unless I am missing something. Firs you can get weather after you input your Zip Code. It will give you the temperature and a bright sun if it ti s sunny outside. You can change this to get a 5 day forcast with the same info for each day. Nothing more. Second, you get some Nes headlines. You can scrow thru a few headlines and then click on any one to read more in a window. Both this and the weather would be many times better if you walked over to your computer to look at web sites. You myst hace the WiFi to get this on your TV, so most people must have a computer. The last thing is the latest stock market price of some of your stocks. I could never get this to work since it woudl not connect to my WiFi. This was weird since it did fine for the Weather and News.
I did downolad the latest software for my TV just before I installed the LinkStick.

I may be getting a bluray which requires an ethernet hookup. If I do that, I'll use the linkstick for my LCD and the ethernet for the bluray...sorry. Try calling Samsung and see why they haven't sent you one.

Thanks for responding!

Hey if you are getting a blu-ray player, try the PS3. I have it and I connect it to my LN40A650 and it works great. The PS3 also has wireless connectivity inbuilt and I can stream movies from my PC to the TV using the PS3.

My Samsung Info Link worked OK until about six weeks ago. Without any notice they cut off my News portion of Info Link. I am still able to get the Weather and Stock information. I have contacted support from Samsung, Direct TV, Century Link and also called USA Today. The only thing I have been able to find out was that my LN52A750R1F is now four years old and I may also loose the Weather and Stocks. I was also told that a Widget may have been changed. I'm not sure what they are talking about. I do think that if you purchase a Samsung TV you should be told that your RSS FEED may be dropped at any time. If this where known you may deside to purchase a different make of TV.

Info link and the internet
Oct 15, 2008 9:56AM PDT

I'm a new user of the Samsung A650.

As suggested on this thread, I connected an ethernet cable to the back of the TV and now get the Weather, News, etc from USA Today.

Is there anyway, I can access other content on the net, for eg : youtube videos ?
Does the infolink allow for this through some menu option ?

Thanks and regards,
Anu
