LN52A550 HDMI issues

May 1, 2009 1:31AM PDT

I have a Samsung LN52A550 HDTV for almost a year. I've this TV connected to HDMI port #1,OPPO DVD player and PS3 connected to HDMI ports #2 and #3 respectively. I checked the output of both the DVD and PS3 and made sure both of them are set with HDMI output. I use a Logictec remote control for all the devices. Please help me understand the following:
1) When I go to the source manual using the Samsung remote control, I notice the two HDMI ports (2 & 3) are not recognized by the TV and not highlighted like the other devices with "amber" color and placed on top of the manual. When I try to reset them, the message says "No device is connected, check the connection"
2)On the other hand when I turn on the DVD or PS3 manually first and then go to the source manual,I noticed the HDMI port is highlighted and I can manually select the port. WHY???

dpc888,

I don't/can't discuss service menu issues. Many of those internal menus are designed for the service technician only, and updates, bulletins and information is available to technicians to perform certain tasks.

I'm sorry, but I can't answer those questions.

Normal I think
May 2, 2009 1:42PM PDT

If I understand your post correctly, you're saying that the source doesn't show as an available option in the source menu unless the device is on -- this is the normal behavior for HDMI devices, I think (at least my TV doesn't show HDMI ports as active unless the connected device is on).

It probably does this because it sort of makes sense that if the device isn't on, there's no reason you'd want to select that input.

It's not a huge problem though -- if you have a programmable logitech remote, there are discrete IR codes to select inputs, so the macros work fine...

Thank you for your explanation. If what you said is true, then I don't understand why HDMI port#1 which I've DirecTV connected to it, is always on the top of the menu and shown as an available source. On the contrary,HDMI ports #2 and #3 are always near the bottom. Furthermore, when I try to re-set ports #2 and #3, it tells me no device is connected. Like you said it really doesn't matter but unfortunately my Logitec macro would not allow me to sequence the devices such that switching the OPPO DVD first, then the TV, and last switch it to HDMI port #2. Same situation is with my PS3.

Hmm

I think your DirecTV receiver is actually always on, even when it's off (i.e. it keeps the HDMI connection alive). You can try switching it to HDMI 2 and see if that stays at the top of the list.

I have a Logitech Harmony 720, and it can switch the TV to ANY input, even one that's grayed out... you're not trying to code a macro to pick the input from the source list are you?

For example, to use my PS3, my remote turns on the TV and switches to the right input, even if the PS3 is off.

Which remote?

What Logitech remote do you have exactly? You should be able to configure it to do what you want (I've only had my Harmony a few weeks, but I managed to get it to do what you're trying to do, I think...)

Which remote?
May 6, 2009 1:19AM PDT

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I have a harmony 628 remote which I use to control all my AV equipment. The remote has no problem switching to input HDMI #1 when I push the button marked "Watch TV", or switch to input HDMI #2 when I push the button marked "Watch Movie". The only problem I have is HDMI #3 that is assigned to my PS3. When I push the input button which I programmed as "Blu Ray", the input always stays at HDMI #1. I played around with remote and found that as long as I have the TV on, then I can switch to any input I want including HDMI#3. Hmmm...
Here is my equipment list and connection:
TV: Samsung LN52A550
TV box: DirecTV, connected to HDMI#1
DVD: Oppo DVD player, connected to HDMI#2
DVD recorder: Toshiba, connected to AV#1 via component cables
Game Console/Blu Ray Player: Sony PS3, connected to HDMI#3
AV Receiver: Denon 5.1, connected to all above equipment audio only via optical cables.

Maybe try increasing the remote delay?
May 6, 2009 8:49AM PDT

So you only have a problem switching to HDMI #3 when the TV is first turned on? You might try increasing the power on delay (mine is set to 15000 ms), though really, it should affect all your devices *shrug* and not HDMI 3.

If you go to the devices tab in the harmony software, then click settings on TV, pick the "adjust delays" option.

It works!

Thank you for giving me this idea. It really works. I adjusted the power on delay time to 15,000ms on the remote and my gosh, it did switch to HDMI#3. Again, thanks for all your help!
