LN46A650 HDMI Audio Drops

Sep 9, 2008 4:13PM PDT

I recently purchased (Sep. 200Cool the LN46A650. I have my Cox Cable digital Motorola (3416) DVR box connected to my TV via HDMI. I am experiencing intermittent drops in audio.

- The drops are happening on both Hi-def and standard cable channels.
- I have connected to different HDMI ports.
- I have switched HDMI cables from different manufactures.
- I plugged into HDMI 2 and then ran L&R audio cables in conjunction with the HDMI.
- I tried to upgrade my firmware, but my TV firmware (2003.0) was newer than the one (2001.3) I downloaded from the Samsung site, so i left it alone.
- I am going blind trying to decipher all the conflicting information that Google searches have turned up, and none of them have been official positions from Samsung.

I really like this TV, but these audio drops are driving me crazy.

Do the audio drop outs happen on all inputs?

Or just the one from the cable box?

Audio Drop Issue

Everyone...Happy New Year and Thank you for all of your help! We did mess with the Fine Tuning and it is the only thing that works. We increased it and we are able to get the volume; HOWEVER, the picture isn't as good. Will have cable re-run lines to our home and see if that helps. We do not have a box it is Time Warner cable.

Thank you again!

LN46A6501FXZA software update
Jan 3, 2009 1:11PM PST

Updated sw and audio is better but still have problem with low audio on a couple stations. I have the Auto Volume turned on. One channel will have low audio and suddenly have large increase in volume and at times volume will be normal /near same level as other channels.

Also have problem with favorites not staying selected. This occurs on channel 15-1,2,3,4 PBS and 11-1 ABC. I know of a 21 inch Samsung set that has the same problem with loosing the favorites. Do not know model but is a 2008 unit.

I have had the channel to change voluntarily without my doing anything to cause this. I have checked signal strength and it is always OK. I am not using a cable box but do use cable.

Audio quality is good with Home Theater. Picture is great but audio is not as good as it should be without Home Theater.

Any ideas on the problem areas? I am still in the return window time frame.

pecht01,

I take it, you've upgraded the f/w to the latest that's posted on the website. What is your set manufacturing date, it should show when you press info key on the S/W update screen.

Can you elaborate how does it start switching channels on it's own ? there's another thread someone started relating to switching channels on it's own. What did the service center say about your problem ? my set dropped audio few times few days ago and has been stable since. I'm using indoor antenna.

Yes have updated to latest software as shown on Samsung website ver 2007.0. Set Mfg date is 2008 9-5. Using cable but no box. Channel change just happened while watching a program. Went to another channel all by itself. This has not occurred since.

Samsung LN46A650 No Audio on One Channel
Dec 13, 2008 12:27AM PST

Help! I just got my Samsung LN460A650 yesterday and there is no audio on the Cooking Channel. The audio is one for just a second and then it clicks off. It doesn't happen on any other channel. It's as if something is telling it to turn the audio off. The firmware is 2008.9 and the most current one listed on Samsung's site is 2007 - so mine is newer. Samsung says it's not them and the cable company says it's not them. What can I do?

luv22read4ever,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your LN46A650.

What I might suggest is to have the cable company come out and check the connections, and perhaps swap the box. If that doesn't fix it, then I might call Samsung to see if a technician can come out and look at the television.

I might be able to help
Dec 23, 2008 1:21AM PST

I'm having the same problems. Our LN46A650 was delivered on 12/19. We noticed over the weekend that the sound drops -- so far, just on one channel (CNN, which is channel 36 for us). We don't have a cable box; we receive the cable signal directly from our cable provider (Jetbroadband, in central Virginia). We have firmware version 2008.9. Once the sound drops, the only way I can get it back is to change channels, then change back, or else power the set off and back on. Then the sound drops again in a couple of minutes.

Here's what I did: I adjusted the fine tuning for channel 36. To do this, have the set on the channel causing the problems. Press the Menu button on the remote; scroll down to Channel, select this and then scroll down to Fine Tune. Adjust the tuning to +2, then save it. If the sound has dropped while doing this, switch to a different channel, then switch back to the problem channel.

Maybe I just got lucky, but since I did this I haven't had the sound drop out. Good luck.

audio issues with 650
Dec 27, 2008 4:45AM PST

thanks for the information. It just seems like an awful lot of aggravation to go through just to watch TV. It's not like they are giving these things away, they cost some serious coin. I would have just returned the TV the minute it did that. I think I will just be having the set serviced by Samsung as it is still under waranty. I will NEVER by another SAMSUNG product again. thanks for your advice and have a nice holiday.

LN46A630
May 8, 2009 10:00AM PDT

I have a LN46A630(M1FXZC) and have been having massive audio dropouts for months now. I bought this TV about 5 months ago, and I have it setup with and HDMI connection to my Motorolla 9200 HD PVR (from Bell ExpressVu).

I find that it drops on both HD and standard definition, but it seems to occur most often when it is recording a show on one tuner while I am watching on another tuner (or watching a pre-recorded) show.

I noticed that the LN46A650 has a firmware update to address some audio dropouts...the 630 has no such update. Can I use the 650 update on the 630? What else can I do other than move to component cables?

Thanks
John

Audio Drop problem with the LN46A500 too?
Dec 23, 2008 2:44AM PST

Having a similar Audio drop out issue with the LN46A500 I just bought. Not running it through the cable box, just a direct coax connection into the TV. What do I need to do to fix this short of having to run the coax through the cable box.

rlsnodgrass,

Is your problem on any particular or does it do it on all the channels ? what version f/w do you have on your 650 ? Mine acted up couple of times and now for the past 3-4 days is stable. I also take it, you're not using cable box with HDMI, it's direct cable to your TV ?

LN46A650 Audio Drop off
Jan 7, 2009 10:26AM PST

I do not use a box and have latest F/W 2007

I called the local station today and asked if they could fix the audio problem as their station was the only one causing and audio problem on my new LCD digital TV. Was told they would refer it to their engineer. Believe it or not this evening so far audio has not dropped. I am waiting to see if this is a fluke of a fix.

Samsung Adio Drop outs
Mar 3, 2009 4:53AM PST

I just bought a Samsung LN46A650 and I also have audio drop outs. It is consistent on some channels and intermittent on others. There is also spontaneous channel changing and when this happens the favorites get reprogrammed. This happens with the Comcast cable right out of the wall (no converter box. The channel changing obly seems to occur on the HD channels. The audio drop outs happen on HD and SD channels. The firmware is version 2008.9 so no need to upgrade. We have 6 days left before our 30 day policy is up from Amazon. The Samsung people don't seem to know what the problem is though they are sending a technician to the house tomorrow. So far customer service has been responsive. I hope Amazon will take this thing back. I fear I might be stuck with a $1500 lemon. If anyone has any ideas, I would sure appreciate it.

Audio Dropouts Ln46A650
Mar 4, 2009 10:57AM PST

I have the same troubles. Use cable but no box. Have 2007 firmware. Had cable tech on site he said they only send what they receive. No help there. Had a Samsung tech come on site. He was no help. He also said if I called for tech to come on site again and they could not see the problem they would charge for a service call. La De Da. He did tell me you have to turn off the true surround sound. That stopped the audio dropouts for me. Seems Samsung should fix that as they advertise True Surround Sound. Also have same channel changing and loss of favorites. Have been told that is due to weak signal and hope it will go away when all stations are digital. I suspect the cable company does not send correct signal level to encourage you to get a box.
