LN46A650 Color Space Question

Dec 20, 2008 10:54AM PST

I've just purchased a new A650 LCD, replacing my Sammy DLP. On my DLP, for color gamut I can choose "normal" or "sRGB". Is this the same as "color space" in the user menu of the A650?

I notice in the A650, the choices in "color space" are Auto, Native, and Custom. I understand that Custom offers a great deal of tweaking options. I may later look into adjusting those.

Does anyone have a more thorough explanation of what auto and native do? My fear is setting it to auto and having it do something like constantly adjusting the brightness/colors.

Thanks for any help.

I called the 800 number b/c I can't seem to find an answer anywhere online. All they know is what is in the manual. It's so strange no one can define what these settings actually do.

Working on it....

squick3n,

I just wanted you to know that I've actually had to forward your question. I'm not sure exactly what the parameters are in our color space setting. Hang tight, I'm looking for an answer.

And the answer...

squick3n,

Thanks for your patience.

Auto = allows only those colors that are expected from a broadcast source.
Wide = allows whatever is on the source material.
Custom = allows you to use test patterns to more accurately tweak color and should be used in conjunction with the "White Balance" and "Flesh Tone" adjustments.

Hope that helps!

Thank you very much. I can't tell you how I've searched and searched for that. What's odd is that I can't think of a reason not to use Native or Custom. Seems like Native should be the default.

I might agree there....

squick3n,

I might agree with you there. Most people would wonder why we offer those in the first place, and it's for calibration purposes. There's little reason to calibrate a television outside of the broadcast spectrum, so those settings are there as a guideline for that one specific reason - NTSC broadcast calibrations.

Let me know if I can help with anything else. Happy
