General discussion

LN46A650 and iPod/iPhone

Feb 9, 2009 11:13AM PST

Warning: Newbie question to follow! Do not read unless you have the patience of Job.
Our new TV will arrive tomorrow. I have looked through the manual online. I have an old original iPod Shuffle that has a USB end. I also have an iPod mini and an iPhone 3G. Can I just plug the Shuffle directly into Wiselink? Can I attach the dock to USB connector to my old mini and plug it into Wiselink? I would rather not use my iPhone if I can help it. TIA.

jekjones15581 ,

The older iPod Mini units will work, and the Pre-Gen-4 Shuffles will work. Due to restrictions placed (not by Samsung) on the Gen-4 and iPhone/Touch units, at this time, I don't believe they will be supported with WiseLink.

So the Mini - probably.
The shuffle - probably.
The iPhone - No.

I hope that helps. Keep me posted, and I'd be interested in hearing how you fare.

Thanks for quick response! I will post back after we get everything set up. It surely would be great to get some use out of my old iPods. This is a great forum!

Bummer

Neither my iPod mini nor my old Shuffle would work. Some of the music was purchased through iTunes, some was music I imported from CDs into iTunes. I could well be doing something wrong. I have tried plugging in the iPods while they are turned on and while they are turned off, but no luck. Too bad.

Strange..

jekjones15581,

That's odd. Did you try plugging in the iPod units, turning them on and then launching the wiselink?

Yes, I did try that. I am beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with my Wiselink connection. I tried putting a jpeg photo on a thumb drive and plugging it into Wiselink. I open Wiselink and I get an error message that no USB device is connected. Is there a way to check Wiselink?

Fat32

jekjones15581,

Try formatting the thumbdrive with Fat32 or Fat16 formats. (Many users try the NTSF file format, but that's not supported). Also, there are some file formats that will not be supported. Those are in the manual, but here is a quick snapshot of supported files.

Formatted as FAT 16 and the thumbdrive worked! I had read this in the manual but couldn't figure out how to do it at first (I am on a Mac). Finally found the pull-down menu in my Disk Utility.
So now I am wondering whether my iPods aren't working because I use a Mac version of iTunes, not a PC version. If so, no big deal. I was more worried about getting my thumbdrive to work so I can do firmware updates.
Thank you!!!! Thanks you!!!! You should be feeling the love right now (Happy Valentine's Day!)

My guess is that the protected, purchased through iTunes tracks won't work though. Only Apple products can play those. I just finished unprotecting all of my music, now that DRM is dead anyway (and I'm not paying 40 cents a track to 'upgrade' to a song I already have).

LWEEL8,

I haven't heard either way definitively on protected or unprotected music. I thought it could do pre-Gen-4 products regardless, but I could be wrong.

since drm isn't apples concern anymore will the 3gs iphone be compatible with wiselink?
