LN40A650 randomly reverting to Store Demo mode

Aug 18, 2010 11:20PM PDT

My tv has worked perfectly for the couple years I've owned it, but just recently it started resetting itself out of the blue even while in use. All settings are lost, reverts to "Store Demo", and this last time wouldn't even let me input any commands (had to unplug it for awhile, thankfully worked afterwards). I'll reset it using the hold Exit button thing, turn it back to Home Use, and that works... for a couple weeks or so, then tv beeps and resets again, repeat.

I'll add that I haven't ever updated firmware, if thats relevant. Also added a Wii (the only change to the setting) around the same time as when these issues started, just mentioning that if by some off chance that that isn't just a coincidence.

Thanks

cthl,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble.

The SHOP Mode can kick in if the MENU button on the bezel is pushed in for a period of time. Would there be small hands or a nearby object that might be pressing against the menu button, or a nearby external speaker? If that happens, check to see if there is a response light, or if tapping the menu button with your finger causes functionality to return.

Since you mentioned it, have you tried removing the Wii connection to see if the symptom happens without it? If the Wii was causing it, this would be the first time I've heard of that, but naturally with the nature of electronics, it's difficult to rule anything out 100% of the time.

Did not know about the bezel button reset, and on that note there was a [pretty mild] fingerprint over the menu button on the bezel, and that's about it. Cleaned that now, so we'll see. The Wii I'll move to another tv just in case.

Now, considering how long the problem takes to reoccur, I won't know if either has worked for like 3 months, hah.

Thanks again in the meantime.

Welp, I'm back, and not for good news.

It happened again today, was playin the xbox and it suddenly went bonkers again. Reset to demo mode, wouldn't let me use any buttons (giving me beeps and remote light flashes), had to unplug and do the whole normal reset process again. Lost all settings, etc... very annoying, considering I fine tune them everytime Sad

As for the Wii's involvement, I ruined that experiment shortly after my last comment, couldn't stand using it on our other tiny TV, hah.

But I'm gonna assume its more likely a faulty battery (or whatever stores that info in the tv set)... in which case, any tips on how to fix that, costs, etc.

cthl,

Unfortunately, I don't think I have any good news on this. It's likely that the set will have to be repaired.

In the meantime, you could run the Plug and Play option and try to choose HOME Mode again, but if this symptom keeps reappearing, it's likely going to need to be inspected or repaired.

If you want, you can call 800-SAMSUNG or fill out an online service request form here:

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/request

Other than that, I can't provide a diagnosis. Costs and all that would be quoted to you by a service technician.
