LN40A550 + HT-AS720 + PS3 = Issues (Mode Not Supported)

May 30, 2009 7:03PM PDT

Hello,

I was having this issue for quite a while now and I have updated all firmwares for both TV and PS3.

My setup has HDMI Output from AS720 to HDMI1 Input from TV. PS3 is hooked up from HDMI1 Input from AS720 receiver. So basically PS3 is hooked up through receiver and receiver is outputting to TV. When I load a game it will work without a problem 90% of the time. But when I exit a game TV says "Searching for Signal" then leads to TV saying "Mode Not Supported". This happens everytime. To get out of the message "Mode Not Supported" all I have to do is switch input on the receiver to any other source then switch it back to the proper input. Then I get the proper image back in the screen. This is a very annoying issue. For one I need to have the receiver remote handy all the time, even thou I have everything hooked up through Anynet+ including the DVD player. I would like it to just function properly. I dont think this "fix" I have figured out is not how a equipment should operate.

In the PS3 you cannot disable the 480p option. But when I have the PS3 hooked up directly to the TV with the same HDMI cable it has no issues whatsoever. My Samsung DVD player has no issues like this even though its hooked up to my receiver. Any ideas or suggestions? I have done a lot of Googling and it seems lot of people are having this issue with this Receiver.

nueok,

Any device that switches resolutions will cause the television to "restart" the data stream, since the television is ultimately responsible for decoding the incoming signal.

Game consoles, particularly the one you're using, is notorious for changing resolutions - between the menu, games, and even some cut-scenes. The sudden changes might be throwing off the HT-AS720, as resolutions change, it may respond differently than the television would handle a resolution change.

I'm going to guess that if resolutions don't change, then the issue disappears?

Sometimes during game play it does happen. For example going from Start page of a game and going into the actuall game play. It happens pretty frequently. Sometimes I get sound but no picture. Sometimes I get picture and sound but the sound has annyoing clicking and crackling noises. Only way to resolve that issue is to completely shut the device off and turn it back on. Even that is a gamble at times.
I was also guessing that it happens when it is changing resolutions, like a computer monitor flickers between resolutions and there is a slight dely. But the reciever should be able to switch between resolutions. Playstaion is set to disply 480p, 720p and 1080p. What would be the proper solutions be with this issue?

nueok,

Try setting it in 720p and see if that resolves the issue.

I'm not sure what's causing the audio issue, though. Hmmm..

Keep me posted.

I have tried 720p and so far the issue hasn't been a problem. But the only problem with this is BLu-Ray movies and games are playing at the lower resolution. And looks terrible. It is a huge difference I can see between 1080p and 720p. So that would not be a valid permanite fix. If the reciever does not support the PS3 it should be labled somewhere in the box. Unfortunately it is way past the return policy for the device. I primarly bought all Samsung units to take advantage of Anynet+. But even that doesnt function 100% of the time. I do apperciate the response but I would apperciate more if we can come with a solution that is viable.

nueok,

The most viable solution would be a consistent resolution being input into the home-theater system or the television. You could hook up the game console directly to the television, and port the sound via optical from the game console to the Home Theater system. Just a thought...?
