General discussion

LN37a550 dark horizontal band

Mar 29, 2009 6:32AM PDT

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone can confirm whether this is normal or not. When viewing a grey or solid color background, you can see a 3-4" wide strip running across the middle of the screen that is slightly darker than the rest of the screen. This is amplified when viewing the screen at certain off-angles. It's apparent regardless of the source input, and regardless of the backlight level.

However, it's subtle enough that when viewing normal TV or movies, it's difficult or next to impossible to spot depending on the image. You can sometimes catch it on a vertical panning shot.

Is this of concern or fairly common?

Thanks.

Maybe?

Some uniformity issues are unfortunately common to LCDs -- my own TV (an LN46A550) is slightly darker in a vertical strip in the middle of the LCD compared to the sides. I can only see it on gray screens though, so I don't let it bother me too much.

If it bothers you (or you're the type to obsess over things), then return it. If you're past the return period, well, you can call Samsung, but the decision as to whether it's normal or not is going to lie with the technician most likely...

Exchanged

Thanks for your response. I exchanged the TV for another set, and checked it in the store. As you said, that one also displayed some slight unevenness on a solid background, but nowhere near as bad as the first. I decided to keep that one, so all good.
