ln32a450 (720p) issues with dvd-1080p8 - samsung tech help

Feb 25, 2009 8:07PM PST

When receiving the 1080p res. (default auto)
from the dvd player i get slight snow. I have
to manually change the res. to 1080i or less.
The dvd player will not hold the 1080i res.
when setting it in setup. No matter what i
do the dvd player reverts back to 1080p (auto).
My ln32a540(720p)has no problems with
the 1080p res. Does the ln32a450 not except 1080p
res. ? And why does the dvd player not hold the
1080i setting always reverting back to 1080p (auto)?

Progressive / Interlaced
Feb 25, 2009 8:35PM PST

LN32A450 is HD Ready not Full HD.
Full HD can handle 1920*1080p @ 50 or 60 Hz.
HD Ready can handle up to 1920*1080i @ 50 or 60 Hz
i=interlaced so actual refreshing 1080/2=540 lines @ a time. Usually ODD/EVEN.
This would happen at 25 or 30Hz.
p=progressive refreshes @ 50 or 60Hz.
So unless you watch extremely high speed action movies you will not notice anything (movie theater = 23.98fps).

firmware upgrade for ln32a450 (720p)
Feb 25, 2009 8:55PM PST

I have a ln32a450 (720p) and ln32a540 (720p)
both hooked up to a dvd-1080p8. The only 1 i'm having
problems with is the ln32a450 and it's dvd
player.

I just checked and there is a firmware upgrade.
Don't know what it fixes and what current version
is on the tv but i'll find out. Hopefully it will
fix the issue i'm having.

Confusing is the DVD-1080p statement.
Neither of your tv's can display 1080p. (Full HD)
DVD should be set to 720p or 1080i / never 1080p

firmware upgrade for dvd player now too

Gees. may have to play the upgrade gamble.
I'm not going to touch the ln32a540 setup
it's working fine so far. I may even live
with the ln32a450 setup. On the latter setup
i just have to push the hdmi select button
on the remote to toggle through the resolutions.

mpjkraak-thanks for your responses.

"Neither of your tv's can display 1080p. (Full HD)"
I know this.

"DVD should be set to 720p or 1080i / never 1080p"
Wish the dvd setup would retain 1080i or less setting.

Like i said the 540 has no problem receiving the 1080p
from the dvd, just the 450. Statically looking snow -
like bad reception until i change the res to 1080i or less.

I think both tv's except 1080p but just gets converted
down to native resolution. Well at least the 540 does.
Maybe samsung tech can chime in. Until i see more issues
i probably won't download firmware until i know what the
firmware fixes. I wish they would display this information
just like other service packs do for software.

Interference solved

No they do NOT. I did check the samsung.com website for this information. max res = VGA 1366*768 HD 1280*720 & HD 1920*(2x540)
768 is max vertical refresh.
(My screen custom resolutions has to be setup 1920 H / 540 V @ 30Hz - this IS 1080i) The interference you see are the missing lines. You are flooding 1080 lines but the TV can only display 540 at a time meaning the other 540 in that timeframe are lost.

The VGA resolution does not allow for certain menu options to be available which is why I do not use this - ever.

Why is this only affecting 1 setup and not the other?
Feb 25, 2009 10:14PM PST

Awhile back i was trying to decide
on blu-ray to at least get 720p. I
decided it wasn't worth it for costs
and my tv res. I called samsung, for the
heck of it, and asked if my ln32a540 would
except 1080p signals and they said yes.
Doesn't mean it will display it but it will
except it. My main thing is getting the dvd
player setup to stay at 1080i or less. It
won't no matter what i do. When i turn on
the dvd , the dvd display says 1080i which
is what i set it to display. Once the dvd disc
is put in and you hit play it reverts back to
1080p (auto). I only get the interfence on the
ln32450 not the ln32a540. I have not played
with the ln32a540 setup because it is working fine.
Getting frustrated. 1 setup plug and play and 1 not.
