LN-S4041D takes a long time to turn on

Apr 17, 2009 11:16PM PDT

My Samsung is steadily taking longer and longer to turn on. When I try to turn on tv after it has been not used like overnight it takes it 5 minutes or longer to power up and keeps on clicking before it will turn on. Sometimes it wil not turn on. It's been frustrating to say the least. Once it is "warm" it will turn off and on ok. Once it turns on it works fine. Tv is 2.5 years old. Any suggestions would be appreciated here. Thanks Jack

Samsung TV's taking to long to turn on and clicking

Same problem
Dec 6, 2010 2:47PM PST

I had the same problem - the TV would turn on very slowly with lots of clicking. It got worse and worse.

I didn't see the posts about calling Samsung. Maybe I started this process before those were posted. I ordered the capacitors online from Allied for about $1 each plus shipping. I followed the instructions by removing the back of the TV and removing the power supply board. From looking at the capacitors, I believe FOUR of them were bad. The backs of them were swollen up and had a brown stain on them. Good thing I ordered 5 such to be safe, I thought I only needed 2. I borrowed a soldering iron from a neighbor but didn't have any solder or flux which made it difficult. I would recommend having solder on hand to be sure you make a good solder joint. I got away with just reheating the old solder and getting the leads to fasten well enough. I also watched the Youtube video found by searching "replace Samsung TV capacitors." One key point is to make sure the grey stripe on your new capacitor is facing the same way as the capacitor you are replacing ie make sure the polarization is the same as the part you are replacing. It's not as clear as a "+" and "-" on a battery, so just make sure you mark the board with a pen to show which side has the grey stripe. It took me a LOT longer than 30 minutes with all the screw removing and re-attaching, but I finally got it to work. TV turns on instantly now.

I definitely think less of Samsung now, but am impressed by the reports here on the forum that they paid for a tech to come out and fix it for free.

I'm impressed.

By folk that dive in and accomplish this.

I wish more folk would research BAD CAPS on google and discover this plague has affected far too many makers and extends far beyond the HDTVs.

Samsung should take care of it!!
Dec 28, 2010 12:15AM PST

My LNT 5271F lcd tv does the same thing as everyone else's. Mine has just started taking longer to turn on this month, and seems to be getting worse...so don't wait on yours if it just starts. I mentioned looking at all these posts and mentioned how it was a VERY common problem it seems in all their TV's! The tech was very polite and helpful and has set me up with a free tech to replace the capacitors for free. Just did this today on 12-28-2010 so make sure you call the 1800 samsung number and they should take care of you. You need to give model number and serial number.

It sounds as if Samsung did take care of your set.

The BAD CAPS plague is sadly being found in motor controllers, refrigerators and more.

It's a shame the source of the problem has not been shut down.

Same woe
Jan 6, 2011 12:58AM PST

I have a LNS4041DXX, bought in 12/06. All the symtoms started a couple weeks ago - delay, click, and a long wait to come on(20 mins). I am sure it is the capacitors that are talked about on the net. I talked to Samsung, at first I was told it was covered, and today(1/6/11) I was told it was not; it is not in the series that Samsung is covering for this problem. Yet, I have seen reports of others who bought at the same time and they covered it. I paid big buck$ for this, and I am not pleased. We bought another Samsung last year, he said that one was ok, I will see about that.

I just called Samsung after reading this thread. I have an LN-T4042H. They are calling a tech service and sending someone over to fix the capacitors for free.

Same problem: Model LN-S4041D
Feb 27, 2011 2:37AM PST

I was surprised to see how many people are experiencing the same issues I am having with my television. I am happy to hear of those people who's model numbers were on this list of free repairs. I unfortunately have the model(LN-S4041D) not on this list and my television is also behaving in the same way. It is taking 2 minutes for it to power up. I really thought Samsung carried top of the line products until hearing every one's complaints. I only hope that the other Samsung products I have purchased will last me longer than this one has. Thanks to the blogs, I will look into to purchasing the capacitors and doing the job myself

Same problem model LN-52A540p2f
Mar 28, 2011 12:47PM PDT

Yes, we started having the same issue around Xmas. I changed the remote batteries first and that helped for a little while. However, the last month things have become rediculous! The TV just clicks and clicks and doesn't come on. Eventually after 20 times of trying it may. We are thinking about leaving it on at night too and just turning off the satelite box...rediculous. The bummer part is we bought a samsung home theater system to work seamlessly with it! Ha! We bought our TV in the fall of 2009. I am going to try the customer service route first before I loose my husband on it!
Thanks for all your input.

The problem was fixed. I called the Cust.Service about the problem and they connected me with another dept(ECS)? They had a local company come out and fix it, no charge within 2 days.

change the capacitors
Nov 29, 2011 4:01AM PST

LN-S4041 - Samsung wouldn't admit the problem "no reports"

<div>There are four 1000u 10v capacitors (little cans) on the power board. <div>Radio shack sells a 1,000u 35v capacitor for $1.79 each
it took me longer to remove all the screws on the case than to replace the four capacitors
find someone who isn't afraid to use a soldering gun and fix the problem for under $8.00!

Hi Ron.

Your claim doesn't stand up to scrutiny as I read the post above yours where Samsung arranged for repair.

But there are folk that want this to be a certain way. I can't guess why.

Called Samsung and they are going to provide the free fix
Nov 15, 2011 10:55PM PST

I have model LN-T4665F (2/200Cool with the same issue everyone else has experienced. I took the TV apart yesterday to see if in fact the capacitors were buldging at the top (they are). Called Samsung this morning and provided the model and serial number. They are sending out a technician to fix the capcitors for free, I hope that is the problem.

We have the same problem with our Samsung tv monitor
Mar 29, 2012 10:19AM PDT

Our three year old tv takes from 20 minutes to an hour to turn on. Sounds like the same problems everyone else describes. We have learned to turn it on when we get home from work, go out and do our exercising, shopping, etc, and come back and watch the news that we have DVR'd. We leave it on mute the entire time we are awake and at home. Pretty sad state of affairs and there is no way we are taking it apart and fixing it ourselves. We will just buy a new large screen monitor and make sure it is NOT Samsung!

- Collapse -
Please stop doing that.
Mar 29, 2012 10:32AM PDT

Remove it from power before it gets worse.

Samsung may be covering this model so use the web site to call it it and see if it's on the list. I see a list at this link.

http://www.samsung.com/us/capacitorsettlement/

--> You may want to research what caused all this. If you do, you find no maker escaped this issue.

My 2007 Samsung is being fixed for free today
Apr 17, 2012 9:41PM PDT

Many thanks to all the people who responded to this thread. I had no idea that my 4+ year old Samsung would be fixed for free. I was only inquiring about the trouble that I was experiencing and was planning on fixing it myself. What a bonus. My model number is LN-T4053H and it was on the list for a one time free fix.

Fixed!
Nov 9, 2012 10:36AM PST

Discovered this thread, and after contacting Samsung, was told my 40" LCD TV was "not in the affected range" as they were only fixing sets made through December 2008. Of course, my set was marked, January 2009. Angry Go figure!

Pulled it open anyway, and quickly found two 1000uf capacitors with bulging tops on the power supply board. The three slits on top of each were black, perhaps a tell-tale they were failing? Anyway, dug around and found this vendor with plenty of parts:

www.newark.com

Their part number 69K7911 ( link / $0.31 each) translates to a 1000uf capacitor with the 25V and 105 degrees C rating. I ordered four for the princely sum of $7.92, including UPS ground shipping. There were an exact physical and electrical match.

I have average soldering skills, so it was routine to use a light-duty soldering iron to remove the old caps. Gently soldered and sniped the excess leads, taking care not to burn/damage nearby parts, then plugged in, and Volia! The set turned on almost instantly. Grin

FYI, my set is a 40" LCD, model LN40A520P1F / LN40A520P1FXAZ, serial # ALD12CSS100072D, mfg. Jan 2009.

Kudos to all who contributed.

Notes:
a. One of the capacitors was caulked/glued to a nearby part, which required a razor to separate them prior to unsoldering.
b. I have two spare caps, if anyone wants 'em, let me know. rscoats at comcast dot net

Dec 2, 2012 4:52AM PST

After reading all of the responses, I called Samsung, told them the serial number, model number, and they had a local TV repairman come to my house and fix it in a couple of days. No more 30 minutes of clicking before it comes on.

Again, thanks to all who contributed.
