live mail and outlook express on xp both wont start

hi,
XP sp3 <div>i have a friend that uses outlook express (yes still) refuses to use something different. recently all message bodies wouldnt show, then i uninstalled and reinstalled IE8, the problem got worse, now outlook express hangs on seeing a message body instead. so i convinced to use live mail instead, it installed fine. then when opening it hangs on the splash screen, this is before it has a chance to import from outlook express.
