Interesting
Feb 20, 2006 2:19AM PST

There are a lot of names I have not even heard of. What is interesting is that of those 220 manufacturers, less than 20 remain. Obviously, we have a lot of re-badged products out there.

For a moment, my post was authored by ''unknown''. Thought this was perhaps intentional per the moderator for the attention my rediculous posting received.

I thought for awhile that maybe CNET was being taken over by some "unknown" hostile alien force.

Now I can relax and see if I can think of any more well known facts about little know subjects. A very challenging thread!

Munts TVs,,, pure JUNK!!!
Our first TV was 21" RCA B&W set in 1954.
I worked for Admiral part time in the service shop when I was in school(1966). They offer me a fulltime postion after I graduated, went to work for IBM instead. John

It's interesting who's still in biz
Feb 21, 2006 2:33AM PST

When I read the list, it's interesting to note who is still in business, and more importantly, to note that from that list, the only companies who make TVs worth a darn are the larger Japanese companies (Panasonic, Sony, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, etc.). I've owned plenty junk made by RCA, GE, Emerson, Goldstar, Magnovox, Westinghouse and Zenith and I'll never buy any of those brands again.

Slow Learner?
Feb 21, 2006 7:56AM PST

Dan,

I used to be a math major so I went back to your post and counted the ''junk'' TV you owned:

''I've owned plenty junk made by RCA, GE, Emerson, Goldstar, Magnovox, Westinghouse and Zenith and I'll never buy any of those brands again.''

.....7 TV's!..... Are you a slow learner or what? Happy

RR6,

Yes, through the 52 years of my life, it took a long time to realize that the better TVs were Japanese. There were various reasons for the repeated self-induced pain of buying American TVs, mostly caused by the need to spend less money. I'm happy to say that it took me less time to learn my lesson when it came to cars. I bought one GM car and I will never buy another.

I'M OLDER THAN I THOUGHT.........
Feb 21, 2006 10:14AM PST

One set of grandparents had a Crosley, with doors.
The others had a Motorola (sp?) It was God aweful.
Growing up my parent's first color TV was a Zenith. I think the next one was a Sears.

Good Grief.

At one time Westinghouse was a good brand,,,then not so good,,,thier motto became "Can you be sure if it's Westinghouse???"
Or did some other company just by them name??? John

I think the new Westinghouse plasma is a re-badged Kelvinator. Happy

Great link!
Feb 23, 2006 1:53AM PST

Patterson,

That was a great link for appliance ads. Being 52, I remember most of these from when I was young and watched my parents round B&W TV. Now, how about a Maytag Plasma washing machine? Why not get a little multi-tasking done?
