Don't let's go down the Format and Reinstall option on two grounds.
1. Format and Install is never the first step to fixing anything, other than Windows.
2. The problem is only annoying and not critical to the operating of the OS.
That said, I note that each folder has to be dealt with individually, so try this. (if you have not already done so)
Open a folder and, using the icon in the bar at the top of the window, set the view to LIST. Leave View Options alone.
Close off the window restart and go back to that folder. Still in LIST or not?
Not sure I understand the "whereas in Tiger, after elimination, the sidebar is absent upon restart" statement. If the sidebar has been eliminated, switched off, why would you expect it to come back?
Of course, I could have totally misunderstood this issue

This is an issue the Genius Bar had no answer for, save reformatting and reinstalling Leopard, which I'm skeptical about, but will reluctantly have to try if there is no other solution.
After selecting "Always open in list view" from "Show View Options", hard drive and some folders on desktop open in Icon view after restart, and when I again select "Show View Options", "Always open in list view" has changed to "Always open in icon view".
I've tried this many times, but the result is always the same. Seems to me that if you check the box to change to "Always open in list view", it should do so.
Also, after restart, HD and most folders open with sidebar, whereas in Tiger, after elimination, the sidebar is absent upon restart. I'm guessing this is the new Leopard default, and in my opinion, another step backwards.
Thanks for any thoughts on these issues.
