Runs on 486 with 16MB of RAM.
This could be one of the best options until you get more RAM.

i have a desktop computer with Windows 98. it has 64MB of RAM. i would like to know if it is possible to get a Live CD so i can run Linux only if i want to.

would be Damn Small or Yellow Dog, the former being the most appropriate and the latter if it's your only desktop. I reccomend adding an inexpensive stick of ram(Would help A LOT).
Damn Small is the most appropriate Linux distro for you. I'll just warn you now that it's not a friendly-looking interface, and it's not the most useful one, but it's the best one for your hardware.
Also, disregard the previous poster's suggestion that you use Yellow Dog. It only works on Macs, and will not run on your PC. (It's also not suitable for 64mb of RAM).
Works fine. My specs: 150MMX Pentium, 2.1G HDD, 80MB Ram.
Althogh slow, it works much faster than any others I tried, including Windows 98se. Once you get past the fact that it doesn't look like other Linux OS's, you discover it has what you need. I use it on my DSL line, Wi-Fi (away from home), and can surf (it comes with Firefox)
check email, etc. Beatrix Linux is another choice that might work. 190 MB in size and more full featured than the 50MB DSL. Won't recognize older 16-bit PCMCIA cards is the only reason I'm not using it. Really like it.
Hope this helps. chuck
