For the first question, when you download the "programs" you are taking the source code. Source code must be compiled. In mandrake, you must install the development packages before you can "make" these programs.
Use ark to unpackage it, like WinZip. Open the shell (terminal) and type "cd <directory of folder>" and ENTER. This takes the shell to that working folder. Now type "./configure". The "./" part means the working folder (less typing). Now let this take a while. If all goes well, then type in "make" without the "./" . Now let this go. If all goes well, then type "make install". Example below. (after unpackage)
cd /home/simon/mplayer 'the unpackaged dir
./configure
make
make install
* A good size program takes about 20 - 60min to install so be patient.
Doesn't that sound fun.
I had to learn this the long way. So this is my contribution to you.
If the terminal says "GCC not installed" or something like that, then you must install the "Development" packages from the mandrake cd's. You should install the "KDE Development" & "Gnome Development" also for greater compatibility.
* For me, 50% of the time I compile, something goes wrong. I suggest looking for ".RPM"s which are binaries and much easier to install. (not to mention faster)
For question 2: I don't know (probably Windows issue)
If you need more help, holla back.

Okay, I am a total linux noob, so I know nothing. I know how to run windows, which is way different then mandrake thus far.
question 1: How do you install new software on mandrake? Everytime I download and try to install something, it just opens this "arc" utility which doesn't seem to do anything except frustrate and annoy me.
question 2: I am running dual boot windows XP home edition, and Mandrake 10.1. Now my internet runs ten times slower in windows, and yahoo messenger doesn't work anymore. Is there any reason for this, or even better, a way to correct it?
Thank you all in advance for your time and patience...
