Linksys WRT54G wireless problems

Jul 10, 2005 11:08AM PDT

I have the WRT54G with the latest linksys firmware (v4.00.7) and 2 computers using Trendnet tew-421pc (pc card for the laptop which is running windows xp sp2) and tew-423pi (pci card for the desktop which is windows 98se) and these cards are both wireless G. I installed the drivers and they seem to be working. On the desktop, I'm using the provided trendnet wireless connection software and on the laptop, I'm using the windows wireless zero thing. I can connect and use the internet, but only for a little while after I restart the router. When I try again the next morning, it doesn't connect at all. It gets stuck at 'waiting for network' forever, it doesn't crash, it just wont go any farther.

WRT54GS, and I believe they share the same firmware. My version is 4.50.6. You can verify with linksys. Their phone support is not too bad.

Linksys wireless problems

If you wireless router is connected to a cable modem and you have them set up next to each other that may be causing your problem. Unless your router and cable modem are about 5 feet or more apart they can interfer with each other causing your modem to continually cycle on and off.

Not the modem

The problem isn't with the modem. The wired computers are working perfectly, it must be something wrong with some wireless settings.

Mine did that as well...

I was having a similar problem with Linksys router. The hard-wired machines were working perfectly and the wireless machine would drop off after several minutes.

I updated the firmware on my router and updated the drivers on my network card/wireless card. I also disable windows management of the wireless network connections. I installed the network management tool for my wireless card. It has been working well ever since. The windows management doesn't seem to work as well as the wireless management IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Nod to MOJO.

Read Mojo's reply again. The firmware is often outdated even on a new box. Also, start off with WEP/WPA disabled until you get your network working. After its working, then lock it down.
