Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander (WRE54G) Help!!!!!!!!!

Apr 20, 2005 8:16PM PDT

I followed the step-by-step installation CD that came with the linksys router package. I set everything up as it told me to do, the problem I THINK, is with the internet security.

I set it at 128 k, then I went back to my notebook and it would recognize my new network,.. it would ask me to put in a code. the code won't work because I mistyped it a bunch of times. so i kept re-installing and refreshing the router to no avail. my notebook ONLY seems to connect when it's unprotected with no security.. why is that?!

anyway, i refreshed my router yet again and set my security to 128 k again. now that i click connect.. the window that pops up asking for the WEP code won't show up anymore. it just won't connect. my notebook is a sony vaio 360g, I have no idea what to do. any help is greatly appreciated!!! Sad

What they don't tell you.

1. Not all devices work together on WEP.
Try latest router firmware.

2. Expanders often fail if you disable a certain broadcast that pundits keep telling people to disable.
Go with what works in this case.

Go Unprotected?

Huh? So, just go unprotected?

I still don't understand how it works.

Think about it.

If I employ MAC filtering, then I've locked the network to just the machines with the MAC ids I admit.

If you buy incompatible hardware or refuse to update firmware drivers, then that's your choice.

And YES, I agree that the vendors and makers of these products made a mess.

Employ MAC filtering

I agree I had a awful time getting my linksys to talk to my Dell laftop through the wireless hookup. I forgot about using wep and the other security encryption and went to MAC filtering and it works great! I think it would be faster too because the computer doesn't have to decode the encryption each time. Be sure to change the default password. Once you lock in your MAC address on the router and set it up for remote access only from your MAC address your are good to go.
