linksys router problem

Aug 1, 2004 9:40AM PDT

i have a linksys router WRT54G model, and the website does not give me information on my question:

when i try to open port forwarding, i type in 192.168.1.1 to connect to my computer, it asks for a login, and it says skip username and type admin as password. i do this but it does nothing. when i scroll through the user name list, i get my old email address as the username. I type in my old email password but nothing happens. how do i just connect through admin so i can open a couple of ports?

i am running windows XP

Sounds like you have somehow changed the password and don't recall it. When all else fails, you can generally do a reset of the entire router. Most routers have a reset button on their rear panel, that you'll need to push in and hold with a paperclip or a toothpick. You have to hold them in for at least 5 seconds.

NOTE: resetting them this way resets all previous setting and passwords back to their default conditions.

Typically on routers the default username is admin with no password, which should be the first thing you change once you get logged in.

You should also disable SSID broadcast, enable MAC filtering and set it up so ONLY your systems can access it (quick tip: enter in all the MAC Addresses first, then set it to deny access to other clients), and enable WPA access if you've got the support for it in the OS and wifi cards. Otherwise, be sure to set up the strongest WEP level you can. Unless of course you want anyone within range of your router to be able to leech off of your Internet connection... Possibly doing something illegal, and leaving a trail that is virtually untracable past your router.

well after about an hour of reworking, the router and internet is back up to working. the wireless network was lost, unfortunatley, and ill have to rebuild that VERY soon. but at least now i can access the linksys config to open up some ports.

any quick ways to rebuild a network?
