Linksys routers are wide open and will allow anything onto its network.

All I am trying to do is get on the network, the passwords are not working and linksys won't help. Do you work for them or something? I have no secrets!! Geez

Two options:
1. The router is defective. Nothing in your post really points to it, but of course it's possible. Back to the shop then, take your laptop with you, and let them show you under warranty it works if they do it. If they can't, exchange if for one that they show working.
2. You're doing something wrong. But you don't tell what you do, so that's difficult to say.

Couple of things don't pass the test here
Sep 5, 2011 6:24AM PDT

1. Manuals for all the Linksys series of Routers are freely available for download.
2. Performing a factory reset on a Linksys is widely documented outside of the manuals.
3. Lack of information as to what model of Linksys is causing grief, even though asked.
4. More than one Linksys causing the same problem is unlikely.
5. Unwilling to answer any questions that could help with the solution.

I think I understand this one.

Many folk are not going to be network admins ever if the product requires us to learn a little more.

The router should allow other devices up to some number like 16 or 32 before there are too many.

"Add a device to a network."
Sep 5, 2011 6:34AM PDT

That's the wrong way. Adding the network to the device would be better already. The best would be something like "connect to the network with the device". But 'get on the network' in your post below isn't bad either.

There's no need to change anything on the network, all you do is configuring the network setup in the device to tell it about this particular network.

And what do you mean with "a network we are already paying for"? Personally, I never paid for a network. Unless you consider having a coffee with Starbucks as paying for a network, but I prefer calling it 'paying for coffee'.

Is this a network that you all have created?
In windows?
or through the linksys?

Details please

If you want a solution to your problem, we're going to need details.
- What is the model number of the router in question?
- What symptom are you seeing that is preventing computers from being added to the network?
- What kind of network security are you running on your router? (WEP. WPA Personal, etc)
- How many devices are already using this access point?

Honestly, people here are willing to help you, but that will require you to cooperate a bit.

Going to just buy a new router. Did all the requisite entering of the 198....ip address and using "admin" as the password, going into the control panel to connect that way, and several other approaches, but nothing worked. Was just trying to help a friend---was not trying to be "uncooperative" Please no need to reply. This was my first foray into CNET tech forums...be a while before I come back!
