Linksys Keeps Dropping Me Off

Apr 19, 2006 12:21PM PDT

It used to be that I could expect to be dropped from the router (internet connection to my broadband Modem)once a month. But lately it happens almost once a day. I know the routine by heart. Power down the computers, pull the plugs on the router and modem, reconnect the plug to the router then the modem, hit the router resent button and power on the computers. Could it be that it is because the router is 6 years old and does't work quite as well as it once did, just like me? Or is there something that I can do to remedy this problem short of buying a new router?

OS=XP Home with SP2

Re: Firmware

I may give this a try. When I went out to Investigate I did find this message:
"Upgrading router firmware can sometimes cause more problems than it fixes! Here are a few things to consider before you click that "Upgrade" button:
Check the Readme or other information that describes what the firmware will do before you do the upgrade. If you don't need new features and your product is happily doing it's job... leave it alone and don't perform the upgrade!
If you do need the upgrade, first download a copy of your existing firmware revision, or the closest earlier revision available. You may need it in case something doesn't work right with the new firmware." I don't have an existing firmware, so I will first see what I can do about downloading that before I do anything else.

My luck...

After dozens (lost count) of router firmware upgrades, I've yet to go back to an older version of firmware.

While I could write terrible words about shipping buggy products, dlink, linksys and others have issued fixes that appear to help me every single time.

Re Linkys
Apr 19, 2006 5:38PM PDT

I also have a linkys router which I also have that issue. I use to go through those same steps. I thought I needed to get a new router (May be I do), then I go to my network places click on properties and go to local area connections right click and click on repair.
Most of the time I gets my connection back.

There are other way,s on checking out to make sure your settings or correct, one is to open up Internet Explorer and type in you IP address If you do not know the IP address then download Belarc Advisor from the net and it tells you about your computer even all the keys. get the IP address from there an put it in the address bar click enter or go When a log in box comes up leave user name blank and type in admin in the password click enter or go and that will bring up the set up page for the linkys router and make sure all the setting are correct.

The link to download Belarc Advisor is bellow.

Did what you said and as far as I can see everything is as it should be within the router. Just a private IP address and Subnet Mask along with a checked box - Obtain an IP Address Automatically.

I did do a repair, so we shall see whether or not that helps matters any.

Thanks

I second the notion -- UPDATE THE FIRMWARE
Apr 22, 2006 1:10AM PDT

First, what router model number are you are using?

Download latest firmware for Linksys products here: Linksys Downloads

If you are using a wireless connection, you may need to change to a different broadcast channel to reduce/eliminate interference.

It is always good to clean your system of viruses and spyware. Spyware is known to cause dropped connections and worse. Scan with at least 2 different antispyware programs. You may have to scan in Windows SAFE MODE with SYSTEM RESTORE disabled to rid yourself of a culprit. After scanning and removal of nasties, sometimes your connection settings will be damaged--then you will need to download and run WINSOCKXPFIX.

Bottom line: update firmware and scan for nasties.
