Linksys Cable Modem/Router combo will not work on Optimum

Jul 21, 2005 10:35PM PDT

I tried to install an new Linksys WCG200 cable modem/wireless router combo unit last night with no success. I had the Optimum support folks change the mac address of the cable modem. I am running WinXP on an IBM NetVista desktop. The cable light on the modem never lit... Had connection from PC to router.. port 1 light lit. Powered off and on PC, I got back on with Optimum support to confirm the mac address and it was accurate. The support team said it should work. I am wondering if the Mac address change can take that quick(10min)? Also looking for any help. I had them go back to my original modem mac add and it works fine. Tried Linksys support and got passed to level 2, no progress made... Any help would be appreciated.

1. The firmware on the router is not the latest.

2. The router is not configured for use with your ISP. I can't do this for you as I don't know your ISP particulars.

There are no firmware updates for the router/modem.
I have all the settings matching the existing 3com modem, linksys wireless router that is running today.

I am wondering if the mac address change never took...

Beyond MAC address.

A " Linksys WCG200 cable modem/wireless router combo " will also need to be called in and your cable identifier (there's a name for it, but I won't look it up now), will have to be supplied. It can take a day or 2 with some ISPs for this to be fielded. Your old cable modem will become non-functional when the change is made.

In short, if your old modem works, your new modem won't and vice versa.

2 mac addresses

Are you sure you are giving them the correct MAC?

Even cable modems with USB have 2 MAC addresses - one for the modem, other for the USB NIC.

Your modem/router combo should also have 2 MACs.
