Limited or no connectivity on belkin router

May 23, 2005 12:11AM PDT

I recently bought a belkin adsl modem with high speed mode wireless G router and a belkin card for a laptop. I've set up the wireless network between a desktop and two laptops. One of the laptops is using the belkin card and the other is using its own built in wireless system, with the router connected directly to the desktop. All systems are operating under windows xp.

On the desktop pc it is indicating limited or no connectivity, but it can still connect to the internet, which is confirmed when you access the router. Sometimes the laptops will disconnect with the internet, yet still show they are connected to the network with good signal strength. This can normally be resolved by trying to reconnect to the network and/or clicking on repair.

Anyone got any ideas on why this is happening?

First question is...
May 23, 2005 12:12AM PDT

Are all the FIRMWARE in the products up to date?

Are the drivers from Belkin the latest?

Firmware?
May 23, 2005 8:54PM PDT

I checked the belkin website for the latest drivers for my router and doesn't seem to be any updates for it.

As for the firmware, well you're gonna have to explain what that is first!

What is...

Many of the routers have firmware updates to correct issues such as yours. You can research what firmware is (you will hear more about such as a computer owner) at http://www.google.com

Firmware?
May 24, 2005 12:28AM PDT

I checked the website again because there was a file F5D7633-4A Annex A (European version only) on the routers manual and drivers download page:

http://web.belkin.com/support/download/download.asp?download=F5D7633uk4&lang=1&mode=

Maybe I'm just being stupid, but I thought it was an addendum to the manual but I tried downloading it anyway hoping that that would explain what it was, but unfortunately it didn't. It had a .bin extension on the file, does that mean anything to you? If this is the file I'm looking for then what do I do with it?

Yup. That's a firmware update.

You'll have to read how to use it or "get it into your router." I can never tell such in these forums since one wrong word and I would be the bad person that gave out the instructions. Belkin must supply the how-to.

It's a shame that products go in the box, on the shelf and may need a firmware update before they work properly.
Get this step done and see if the problem continues.
If you don't have the the European version, then we wasted one exchange.

Updated firmware
May 24, 2005 1:17AM PDT

I updated the firmware with the file I mentioned before, and hopefully that has solved the problem.

However, on the desktop (were the router is connected) the local area network icon in the bottom right is still displaying limited or no connectivity, despite the fact its still able to access the internet. A fact that is backed up by the green light in the router setup utility! Should I do anything about this?

P.S. I fully agree with you on the point of products still needing an update going on the shelves. Even a little piece of paper thrown into the box highlighting the problem, and stating how to solve it would be a big help! Not to mention the fact millions would be saved around the world in stress and coronary clinics!

Next up. The PC.
May 24, 2005 1:53AM PDT

Next in line is the PC. The two drivers I always need to update are:

1. The motherboard driver package.
2. The network card driver.

That usually cures it unless there is a real cable issue.

Network card drivers
May 24, 2005 2:41AM PDT

Unfortunately it seems like the problem hasn't been solved

I had to buy a nic before I installed the router as our computer didn't have an ethernet connection. Windows xp identified it so I didn't bother to get any other drivers for it, so I'll try to get the latest drivers on the net.

Here's another one for you: I went to belkin again to get the latest drivers for my card. After running the file I then downloaded it wanted to uninstall the belkin card, rather than install anything! I said yes, just to see what happened, but I had to reinstall the card.

And that is likely "it".

Something is a miss with the network card drivers. Triply check that it's for XP (the drivers) and what install noted they supply.

Still no luck!

Sorry about the late reply, I've been away for a few days.

I went to install the drivers that came with the nic card, which were on a floppy drive. Much to my frustration the floppy drive on the desktop seemed to have disappeared!!! I tried going to run and typing A:\, still no luck, thinking that somehow it got renamed (very unlikely, but I gave it a shot) but still no luck.

I got a friend of mine to copy the files from the floppy onto my memory stick using his computer. Following the instructions from the nic manual, except anywhere it said to type A:\ I changed it with that from where the memory stick could be found. Still nothing, then I let it find the drivers automatically, and when it looked like it was installing something it just froze!!!

Not long before I began to look at setting up the wireless network I had been away for about a year, and in my absence the other users didn't take care of it like they should have.

I've decided to format the desktop and reinstall xp, I'm also hoping that this will also improve the speed of the computer which has declined quite a bit in my absence. It'll take me a couple of days to make sure I have all the software for the various pieces of hardware attached to it, and to make sure that none of the other users have anything on it they can't afford to lose.

I'll keep you posted on how things go.
