Limewire- I deleted but would like to reinstall if safe

Dec 4, 2004 3:55PM PST

Hi everyone.
I have deleted my limewire because of hesitations and comfirmations I have gotten from the forum, but wonder if it may have been safe being used the way I was using it.

First of all legality reasons:
I paid for the ability to download and use the service.
I only download songs for personal use, i.e MP3 player and cds in the car. I don't distribute or sell what I download!

Second,
I have a firewall and virus protection, and do an adware scan and spyware scan just about everyday and have come up with little or no problems.

I know that Limewire is infamous for spyware, but have had no problems as long as I scan and remove any possible problems daily.
I probably download 1 song per month, so to give you an idea of how frequent I use it...

Can I reinstall it and be safe with the way I was using it, and legal as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Steve

"First of all legality reasons:

Are you paying for the downloads? Paying to use the service doesn't mean you are legally downloading the music or other programs.

I guess that answers my legal question. To the best of my knowledge, limewire doesn't have an option to pay for each download..
So it is illegal to download all together? Or just illegal to download and make copies to distribute?

Thanks again,

Steve

Steve,

Think carefully about the song you spend a year on, not only in the studio but pitching to the record company. You've been living on macaroni and cheese, living with your friends and then someone pulls you over to their computer and tells you...

"Steve, great song. I got it off the internet for free!"

Was this fair to you?

Steve, And Another Example...

Although some software CD's and a few "uncopyrighted" music selections allow for making downloads and copies, at this moment I'm looking at the back of a copyrighted music CD which says these words:

"Duplication is a violation of copyright laws".

Simple and quite clear. It's your decision on how you deal with it except to say that the forum policies don't condone illegal activity.

Hope this helps.

Even the songs you pay to download

won't burn properly to a cd so you can't use the cd in a home or car cdplayer........so what you think you've paid for isn't what you think you are getting the 'rights' to.

Also....I've seen a number of complaints from people who have paid to download a song only to find out that it won't even play on their computers either....so buyer beware is the rule in every case.

I, too paid for Limewire, and downloaded a few songs, My rationale was that they were not for sale or distribution, but I realize now that, strictly speaking this is illegal, and so I have uninstalled and dumped the Limewire software and will not use it again; I'm doing it strictly legal from now on.

One of my issues is the diverstiy of music available through Itunes, which is my primary source. I like a broad range of music, some of it too obscure to find on Itunes. Are there other sources of Mp3 available for people who want to be legal and purchase?

Thank you
