Now there is a scary word. What exactly do you mean by it? Could you define Apple's proprietariness for us?

High Def DVD. Probably not be able to change out the installed DVD player. Rather like you probably will not be able to change out the installed DVD player in most Windows laptops. You will be able to connect to your HD TV provided that it has the require DVI connector on it.

DRM'd WIndows Media files. Probably not going to happen. Something to do with Microsoft proprietariness. The Mac does not play Windows DRM'd files. Not a fault of the Mac, rather the fault of MS. Note that Windows can play Apple DRM'd files because Apple wrote software for Windows users to play it with.

Personally I do not see many Windows DRM'd Media files so maybe there are actually more Apple ones around. Maybe it depends on where you look and what you are looking for. As for your fear of being locked into iTunes, what would you like to be locked into?
