Lid Close Action Missing from Windows Vista Power Options

Aug 29, 2007 6:17AM PDT

I recently purchased an HP Pavilion DV2000 Series laptop computer with AMD TL-56 Processor and Nvidia chipset.

See this link for the laptop I purchased at Best Buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8404201&st=dv2415nr&type=product&id=1180743304645

It is running Vista Home Premium.

Since Day 1, and on every laptop of this model that I have looked at the power option for "lid close action" is missing in all places that it is supposed to be. I have gone rounds with HP technical support and they have been of no help.

At present it is impossible to define what you want the laptop to do when you close the lid. All it does presently is turn the screen off and leave the laptop running. The laptop will never go into standby and will just run the battery down if left in this state for an extended period.

All laptops of this series seem to be affected by this problem. I have looked at 15.4" models of HP laptops with the same motherboard/video card/chipset combo and it is not affected by the problem, it has the "lid close action" option present in the advanced power options menu and the link in the power options control panel on the left side to address "what to do when I close the lid"

Internet searches, newsgroup posting, and HP support have all failed me thus far. The best option I got from HP is that they will take the laptop back and give me a different one, but that isn't an option for us as one of things we liked about this model was the light weight and screen size. The 15.4" model adds heft, but not resolution.

Re: System Restore

No! heh, they told me to do the same thing. I did, the option was still missing. All I accomplished was assuring that I'd be restoring backups for the rest of the day.

System Restore Won't Fix It
Oct 7, 2007 11:09AM PDT

Don't do a system restore. All it will do is waste your valuable time. Since this is a problem with the BIOS that was present on the notebook in it's factory state, doing a system restore will do nothing for you. All it will do is succeed in wasting time and setting your notebook back to the broken state it came in.

HP is really dropping the ball on this one.

Hey. It's already been stated a few times. The solution is downgrading your bios. Read the older topics for the links.

Downgrade for Intel Only
Oct 10, 2007 8:53AM PDT

The problem is, there isn't a readily available downgrade option for AMD chipsets.

The only one I have found that works, only works if you un-install the wireless card, with the wireless card it won't boot.

So while the issue has been solved by downgrading for Intel owners, this issue is very much not solved for AMD owners.

hp surely has a working downgrade for amd, it's on their server but not their site. Somebody needs to take the time to find it out of all their apps Sad

problem when closing lid
Oct 10, 2007 8:25AM PDT

yes, I have done all of that already, does not do anything, I have called and emailed again, some supervisor is suppose to call me within 3 business days from yesterday, just like the last promise, no call. I went to OFFICE DEPOT electronics here in Minnesota looked another 14.1 inch dv2416 INTEL it does have the close lid option. It appears it may have something to do with AMD machines, I have also sent them an email today. Will keep you posted if successful. Not getting my hopes ups - next try, call circuit city and return.

Unfortunately, I don't think anybody has found a bios that works with AMD processors, I know some person posted a link, but that's just a link to the intel processor.

lid closing problem dv2000
Oct 12, 2007 2:55AM PDT

Well, last night I went into control panel selected (non classic view)
clicked on Mobile PC and there was "choose what lid does closed", so I right click, it disappears but it goes to the power button and sleep screen window , so I selected the sleep button and selected "Do Nothing" the close lid button what not visible. I was able to surf and watch and listen to video with the lid closed and no disconnect.
Then I tried to shut it down using my re,ote - no go. needed to open lid or close from external monitor. Does this help anyone. Not sure what it will do tonight, maybe I just got lucky.

Same problem

While diggin' into the Microsoft Document of Power Policy, I've found the next comand to show the option Close Lid in the Power Button Section.

You must first open a Console with Administrative permission. In the Console type the next command:

powercfg -attributes SUB_BUTTONS LIDACTION -ATTRIB_HIDE

With this command, the option must appear in the section of Power Buttons. I'd like to know if this works fine for you, so let me know the results.

To hide the option again, only change the sign - (minus) for + (plus):

powercfg -attributes SUB_BUTTONS LIDACTION +ATTRIB_HIDE

Some computers are not displaying the Hibernate Option, so type the next for them:

powercfg -attributes SUB_SLEEP HIBERNATEIDLE -ATTRIB_HIDE

Again let me know if this works in your computer please.

Still no go
Nov 5, 2007 11:22AM PST

I found this document myself a while back and tried all these steps. None of them work.

It is clearly a BIOS issue, not a driver issue, or an OS issue. For whatever reason, in this version of the bios the device that allows the OS to see the panel for taking these actions is not on, even though it was enabled in previous versions of the BIOS.

Still hoping HP issues a BIOS with an update that includes the proper ACPI devices.

Bad News...
Nov 8, 2007 2:26PM PST

I hate to be the bearer of some likely bad news, but unless they have a beta version of the bios they haven't released for us they will not be able to fix it.

I do hope they fix it, and if the do that you will be able to share the fix with the rest of us, but my hopes are not high...

Here's the answer I got when I called HP
Jun 1, 2008 3:37AM PDT

I was told by the customer service rep that the HP engineers informed her that HP was too cheap to put the hardware on the laptop that is needed to support the lid close action. And that I was SOL.

So, if you have a dv2146us laptop, I'm afraid you are out of luck. If anyone finds out otherwise, please let me know.

to use the lid close acpi function. the problem lies in when they updated the bios to force fan on 24/7 to "bandaid" the nvidia problem, they took the function away!!!!!!! HP SUCKS! and are liars!
