I stream mkv files from the computer to the TV with no problem. But can I set the closed captions to see them while I watch those mkv files?
thanks

As you discovered.

The ability to switch captions from one to the other is not supported by most if not all Smart TVs. If you require this and it doesn't do this, then why not return this set and start your search again?

media player

The abilities of subtitles and audio channels support lie within the media player that any device has.

The media player in almost all smart TVs are very primitive.
If you just want to play any video file as it is with no tweaking, that is OK.

If you want to choose subtitles, audio tracks etc. you have no luck.

To get full control of playing video/movies files, an external stand alone media player is needed.

LG TVs do display subtitles
Jun 24, 2013 12:27PM PDT

My friend has an LG TV and I know he is streaming videos with external subtitles (SRT, SUB, ***, etc.) without any problems. He has a different model to your TV but I guess yours should work also. My guess is that either your external subtitles are not being sent to your TV when you are playing your MKV, or your subtitles are embedded inside your MKV and your LG TV model may not support that. Try using a media server that supports streaming video and external/embedded subtitles to LG TVs. I use Mezzmo server, but there are others.
