LG's 42lp1d 42" LCD TV - - - Any reviews or thoughts??

Oct 7, 2005 12:15PM PDT

Greetings all. I have been looking at getting either a plasma or a LCD HDTV for probably about 7 months now and I can't make up my mind on which one to get. I was long sold on the Pioneer 4350hd plasma, but that model has been replaced with the 4360hd. And the $4000+ they want for that is way out of my league. My second choice was the Panny 42PX50 OR 42PX500 plasma, preferably the PX500. I have seen this unit online for under $3000, which is a really great deal. But my new interest has been LG's 42" new LCD model. This one, unlike other models, has HDMI and a 9-in-2 memory card reader. I have looked EVERYWHERE, but cannot find any news about this set. The specs, including resolution and other particulars really sound nice, but I have no idea on what to go on for this set. I have seen this model go on eBay for about $3400, which is a bit much, but might be a bargain if it is indeed a nice set. Any help would be nice. Or should I just go for the Panny??......

LG LCD vs Panasonic Plasma
Oct 10, 2005 12:24PM PDT

I am a Circuit City employee and personally i would not go for the LG, I don't find the picture looking that great, you had it right when u said panasonic. It has 8.5 billion colors and a 5000:1 contrast ratio, along with a life span of 60,000 and pixel shifting technology allows for basically NO burn it ever.... panasonic is also one of the few manufacturers to master the true black detail and best blue to red gas ratio......

out of the 2 tv's you gave me thats my opinion, the 50 vs the 500 not alot of difference between the 2.

Which TV?

Or you could just wait 6 more months for the next best thing. Or for what you want to come down in price. Then wait 6 more months. And so on.

Be aware, if you are trying to find exactly what you want and are going to go out of your way to save $100 by finding it on eBay, you could be frustrated with the process.

Bargain shopping is different from shopping with electronic performance expectations. It is rare to be able to accomplish both. Find a compromise, but don't kick yourself if you do spend a little more to avoid a headache in the future.

Or just don't buy if you can't afford what you want.

Not so much bargain shopping as trying to get the right set

Morgan & mhalb,

Thanks for the input. That's what I was hoping for. Morgan, I am not really trying to bargain shop for a set. I have my choices narrowed down to my own personal 3 selections (Panny 42px50 OR Px500; Pioneer 4360hd; and the LG 42lp1d LCD). I mainly was interested in everyone's opinion on which of those 3 sets would be the best choice.

I mentioned eBay for the 42lp1d mainly because there is only one other place I have seen it adverstised online, and that was for $3800. I merely mentioned eBay because if the LG set would truly be the best choice, then maybe spending over $3400 or $3800 or whatever would be better justified. But if it is not a worthy set or not nearly as good as my other 2 choices, then it would be a no-brainer to spend UNDER $3000 to get the Panny. I just mention the LG model because its specs off of LG's website and here sound pretty nice. The "true" HD resolution of 1366 x 768, with built-in tuners, a 9-in-2 memory card reader, hdmi connections, etc. all sound like they add up to one nice set. I just, personally, have not seen this set or even its 37" brother ANYWHERE. That's why I was looking to here for help.

I am committed to purchasing this set through eBay. I mainly wanted to see what was out there from a pricing stnadpoint. I will spend the money if need be, but I don't want to buy something that I have never even seen or heard anything about. Let me know if you have any info on the LG, or a preference on the 3 models I listed. Thanks!
