Oct 4, 2013 1:22AM PDT

I have a LG Portable Super Multi Drive DVD drive which has a split USB (mini USB to Twin full size USB) I guess this for power and communication, my laptop cannot see this drive so I cannot load programs onto my Toshiba Satellite laptop, is has worked fine before, the laptop does not get used very much but due to my desktop being in sick bay I am having to use it, any help would be welcome

So far no.

I've yet to find a current (say in the last 5 years) that uses these USB DVD drives.

To use this drive it needs some PC to play the content.

The very first thing to do: try this drive on another PC/laptop.
- If it doesn't work there either try another drive.
- If it does work there, it's an issue with the laptop.

If it's an issue with the laptop I'd start with trying if it will see a USB-stick and a portable hard drive.
- If it doesn't you better go to a repair shop. If that doesn't suit you at the moment, use Dropbox or a comparable service to download the contents of those DVD's to the laptop (use another PC to upload).
- If it does see that USB-stick or portable hard drive, use that until you found the cause. Just copy the contents of that DVD to that USB-stick or external disk on another PC

I have tried a memory stick, that works, I have tried the powered usb hub and that doesn't so the only thing left is that I lost the original cable that came with the drive and had top pick one up from my computer shop, it could be that outwardly it looks the same i.e. mini usb to twin full size usb but could the wiring internlly be different?

That seems something they can best try in the shop. But USB is very well standardized so I doubt if that's the case.
Anyway, it's easy to test for them by trying it on their PC, first with your drive, than with another one. The outcome of this experiment will show if you need another cable or another drive (or both).

There are several LG portable drives listed and I am guessing yours is one that doesn't use and A/C adapter for power, rather uses USB input. Something that MAY work would be to run the drive through a USB A/C powered hub. The simple test to see if this MAY be the problem would be to hook it up to a desk top computer and see if it is recognized. My guess is that the L/T (USB) doesn't have enough ooomph to run it, therefore a powered USB hub.
