LG LM40 laptop

Jan 9, 2005 2:07PM PST

Hi everyone
I couldn't find enything in CNET about LG, Does it have a reason?
I have been told that this model(LM40) is the exact model as the IBM T40, same features, made from Magnezium,5400Rpm...(Different price of course). They explained it by saying that that IBM are making their computers in the LG factory.
What do you think?
Thanks.

LG (Lucky Goldstar) is Korean -- Chinese company is now IBM
Jan 10, 2005 4:49AM PST

A Chinese company just purchased the IBM computer business and they were making the computers already. IBM will continue to do service and support in the US.

The name did start with an L but is not LG (which is a Korean company -- Lucky/Goldstar shortened to rid it of the low end image from all the Microwaves and clock radios in the past).

LG and Samsung (both Korean) are both turning out quality products like Cell phones, LCD TV's (LG just introduced one at 71 inches across to best Samsung), etc

LG has some very nice front loading washers in Best Buy, etc and high end refrigerators also but because they don't have an established service network in the US it makes buying these high end products more risky.

So, if you can guage that the LG service in your area is decent they are worth considering at they are a true global powerhouse.

But, again, for higher priced items (especially over $1,000) you have to consider the service presence and track record when making a purchase in addition to the value and quality of the product itself.

Is it possible?
Jan 10, 2005 3:16PM PST

SO, Do you think it's possible that it's the exact same computer as the IBM T40?
Is that the reason why they can't sell Lg in the U.S, because of an agreement between LG to IBM??
I'm from Israel and though we don't have LG office here we have these computers with a local importer waranty (Same goes with Dell), so I concider purchesing this one, It has great features.
Thanks

Yes, most notebooks come out of China/Taiwan, etc
Jan 11, 2005 3:12AM PST

Yes, most notebooks now are made by companies in China, Taiwan, etc. and then US companies put their name on them or other companies sell them differently worldwide.

For instance, Compal is a major Chinese notebook manufacturer. HPZT3000 and Compaq X1000 models (HPshopping.com) are built by Compal and even ship directly from Shanghai, China when you order custom online (via Fed Ex -- and you can watch the tracking). Acer sells the 2025 series off the very same platform. The outer case if different but the internals are identical as people have posted this on X1000forums.com --the weight is 6.5 for the HP/Compaq and 6.6 pounds for the Acer.

So, yes, if you can figure out what other model variants are being used for IBM models you may find a cheaper one being sold elsewhere (like LG).

Keep in mind the service may not be the same between IBM and LG though ....

IBM an excellent company to deal with / LG not / However
Jan 12, 2005 2:26AM PST

I think they are both pretty crummy units showcasing Made in China professionalism. You might want to look at Sony's Vaio line. Japanese-made electronics look and feel like electronics should, and that is just what you get when buying Vaio. Panasonic also manufacturers its computer line in its own Japanese quarters.

To the older sect, Lucky-Goldstar is heavily associated with cheap garbage. The company quite successfully restructured in 1995 in a last ditch attept to recover from what was a slumbering mess. With the trigger firmly locked on the spontaneity and impressionability of the clean slate that is our youth, "LG" and "Life's Good" were born.
