LG DVD drive model GSA-4160B - Cannot Burn without errors?

by dgm / December 15, 2004 1:25 PM PST

Hey everyone, I just purchased a new LG DVDRAM drive model GSA-4160B. It has been a nightmare over the past 3 days since my purchasing it. Even though I have updated the firmware to the latest version A302, and have updated the BIOS on my motherboard, I still cannot successfully burn with this drive. I am running an AMD Athelon 4 1.4GHz with 768 MB RAM on an MSI K7T266 Pro motherboard. When I start a burn, I am getting communications errors when the lead in writing starts. Also in the few cases that burns report as successful in the log, the burn process fails during th lead out writing! Also if verification is on in the software I use which came with the drive, Nero Express 6.0, the verfication process freezes and I need to manually stop the Nero application by using control+alt+delete. I have wasted over 20 DVD+R's and 1 DVD RW of good quality on this drive so far. I brought the unit back to the store that I purchased it from today and did a test - it burned successfully using the same software and DVD+R media that I was using on a test computer.
If anyone has any suggestions, would they ever be welcomed an appreciated.....I don't know what else to do.

Just FYI.

I'd take your machine back to its maker and have them fix it.

It's likely to be the usual drivers, spyware or even something simple like recording at 1/2 the rated speed of the media. Some won't accept the 1/2 speed solution and I have no cure for those.

Media and more...

First, Bobs response is to take it back. It is new so you should be able to exchange or refund.
Media. I've noticed this about my burner. The 8x +Rs that I have bought(HP) have been hit and miss at 8x. Slow down the burn. The 4x(Memorex) media I have has burned 100% good. Try a different media.
Installation. I've been told it is better to have the burner on a "master" channel. Mine is connected to secondary IDE as the master. I don't know if this is true but it is worth a shot.

I bought this burner 2 days ago. I have not had a good burn with Ridata DVD-R 4x. All the digital noise and the DVD stopping half way. CDR's at 40x worked fine. I have been successful with DVD+R DL. It seems to work ok with those.

Thats my experience with this.
