Lexmark Z23 Printer Not Recognized

Oct 2, 2004 3:09AM PDT

I connected a Lexmark Printer Z23 to the computer and it was recognized and then "something" changed and now the printer is not recognized. There is also a HP 1120C printer connected so I print to that printer - but I would like to use the Lexmark. What setting do I need to check and how?? I am using Windows XP Professional as the OS.

1. Reinstall the drivers.
If that doesn't help:
2. Remove the printer from Device Manager, then reboot and follow the installation instruction that came with the printer.
If that doesn't help:
3. Install the printer on another computer to see if it might be a problem with the printer in stead of with the system.

And ...

What exactly means 'not recognized'? Could be,
- not found by new hardware wizard
- gives 'no printer'-message when installing the driver
- not in Device Manager
- not in Start>Settings>Printer (Windows 98 language)
- not shown in File>Print menu to choose from
- giving error message when printing

More info, including the full text of error messages and when they appear, might be helpful. Also tell if it's a parallel or an USB printer.

Not the only one...

I have the exact same problem, and what it says is
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned. and Windows does not recognize it."

When you click on this Windows XP style toolbar alert message pop-up thing, it gives you the wonderful advice to reconnect it. That does absolutely nothing, no matter in what way you connect it, or in whether you go into Printer Properties and switch it manually to the recognized USB port, etc.

What has worked is reinstalling the driver everytime that you need to use the printer, so just keep it handy I guess, until a long term solution is found.
The driver is located at: http://downloads.lexmark.com/en/us/index.html

That's all I got, Peter
