I recently ran into a case where the owner of a Lexmark X83 smelled smoke. When I arrived to troubleshoot the problem, there was no smoke or smell, but the underside of the glass was coated with a cloudy film. The scanner is affected either by the film or the overheating that caused the film to form on the underside of the glass. She now has random color stripes in the scanned images.
Does anyone know how to open the case, so that I can clean the underside of the glass?
This has been a wonderful machine, with results far more than I had expected. One weird thing, tho: From time of purchase (just over two years ago) the scanner bed had a cloudy appearance. This was either within the glass or on the underside -- not the side I could clean. Never did the cloudiness show on a scan or a printed image. Approximately 9 to 12 months ago, the bed developed a crackly pattern, rather like frost on a window. Again, it was within or on underside of the glass. Again, this had no effect on scans or printed products. Within the past few days, however, the cloudiness has begun to show on the printed product. I doubt that any at-home fix can be done, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. Thanks so much. I've gotten so much great info from newsgroups and forums!!
