Let's get Diggy with it? *lawsuit*

www.beta.netscape.com

I listened to the podcast today to be completely surprised by Netscape (note: this is june 15th)

Anyway... Clicked the link yet? If not, go ahead and be surprised. I looked at it and thought two things. 1-They didn't just copy a play in Kevin Roses Playbook, but golly they ripped the whole thing off. 2-I like digg, and I'd like to also see non-tech things in a social news site. Another IRONIC thing, is that one of the top stories is AOL COPIES DIGG!.... There are a few things that netscape changed from the regular digg we all know and love. First, instead of Digging stories, you vote for them, second instead of linking to the story in the title itself, the title links to a page with the expanded version of the story, and some comments. There is another link for the actual story. Some people may like this, some people may not. Anyway, I think it's ok if Netscape does this, but it can give them some pretty bad press.....

Jason Calcanis says: "We did not create the New Netscape to copy DIGG, no more than DIGG copied Delicious or Delicious copied Furl. All of these sites are evolutions of the first wave of bookmarking services. The key thing we are doing different is that we are having our editorial team followup on stories that make it to the top 20 list."

"If the audience votes a negative story about AOL to the top of the list (like they did today--our first day!), we will follow up on it for our users. If the audience votes up a negative story about Netscape--like this one--we will follow up on that as well. I know this is very meta, but this is the evolution. Journalism-->Wisdom of Crowds-->Journalism--->Discussion=Better Journalism."

What is the BOL crowd's opinion on this? One small step like this could be the next giant leap for web 2.0. I think about it and it isn't going to damage Digg at all... Really, it's only going to up Netcape's "cool" a little bit. Maybe it might not turn out to be a big deal a few months later.... We may never know, but that's why we ask for opinions.... What do you think?

My opinion...

Is it a copy of Digg? Yeah, kinda. Do I think the concept of user promoted stories, links, etc. should be exclusive to only Digg? No (to be honest, I wish there were other places). I'm sure Netscape did their homework on what patents were out there and how much they could take from Digg without bringing on a lawsuit (hopefully they did!). However, it is a pretty obvious copy of Digg.
