Question

Let me reask my question,How to connect HP Pavilion wireless

Mar 31, 2015 3:39AM PDT

I have a HP Pavilion Elite m9040n computer. Right now I'm wired to my modem/router. Can I make a wireless connection with this computer? My computer has a 802.11 b/g wireless USB adapter card. If I have to buy something I would be willing to do so. Thanks

Answer
That instruction should be with the added USB adapter.

So are you saying there's no Wifi card in computer?

Didn't find one.

But such can be added, customized and why I can't give a specific answer. You note some USB adapter but the exact make and model is missing so I can't see if there is a manual for its use.

So it has a WiFi-adapter. Then the answer to your question "Can I make a wireless connection with this computer." is something like "The computer should be able to, but at the moment it's doubtful if you can do it." For a better answer, tell more.

I have been running this computer on a system that has a modem and router. I have Comcast. I bring a coax cable from wall outlet to my modem. Then there's a coax cable coming from my modem into my router. I have a cat5 wire going from router into the back of my computer. I unhooked the cat5 cable that runs from router to back of computer and lost internet service on computer. My Blueray DVD sets in another room and can run wireless. My SmartTv runs in the same room as Blueray and it picks up internet wireless. My computer sets just under the router. How and what do I need to do to setup computer to pick up wireless? Thanks

Install the drivers. Check for errrors in Device Manager. Then run the Windows Wireless Configuration to configure it: http://www.csuci.edu/tc/wireless/7/ shows it for Windows 7.

But why should you? A wired connection is faster.

SmartTV

I want to be able to send photos from my computer to my SmartTV. The only wires from my computer to my TV is the coax cable coming in from Comcast and a Cat5 Ethernet wire conection from computer to TV. I know I have the option of a thumb drive but would like to give this a try. Thanks

I meant to say a Ethernet wire from router to back of TV. Also can use a HDMI cable from computer to TV because computer doesn't have a HDMI port. Thanks

So this is the same question?

If your PC is wired and you say have some Samsung smart tv that is on your LAN via cable or WiFi you do not have to put the PC on WiFi to talk to it.

HOWEVER there are setup issues by the dozens that cause support headaches. For example and this is one of those dozen is http://forums.cnet.com/7726-7589_102-5412417.html?tag=posts;msg5412417

In that case the router's firewall would be a problem and cause this attempt to fail.

-> Frankly the makers are not accepting they will provide support to fix up your network to get it working.

Answer
you can do both at the same time

if you wanted to. Nothing gained in data flow more than wired alone, but it's possible. You need to be sure you have loaded the proper windows driver files for the USB wifi device, or if using Linux, just plug it in and hope that's one which has drivers already inbuilt to the kernel.

Wireless

You could go wireless with that system, it does have onboard wifi. The problem with going wireless is that you are going to drop, typically, quite of bit of download capability, basically speed...but as to your question, it should work... ..as long as you have a wireless router/gateway.

Update from Micrsoft

Well it connected. I will have to research more in the next couple of days. I had an emblem on lower right corner telling me there was some updates that needed updating. I've done this several times over the years. So I did. Several had to do with Windows 7 security. Couple on some Microsoft Office. One on my monitor. I think there was 25 total. Well it downloaded and installed. Asked to restart computer. I clicked yes and during the restart the computer turned of and started again and said something about reverting back to ?. But after it did restart it brought up a screen that asked about connecting wireless, I clicked yes and after some more (circle going around and around) my computer connected wirelessly. Go figure. I've downloaded several times over the years and never had computer wanting to connect wirelessly. I'll have to go into update folder and see what didn't install properly. Let you know later. Thanks
