Try the top two posts in the Laptop Troubleshooting forum. There is rarely any step by step given but see if these give you ideas.

Sounds like the cold fluorescent is acting up

It's the backlight for the screen and is usually at the bottom. Generally it's a part of the screen itself and you can't replace it by itself. There's also a high voltage inverter board involved. It's small and usually in the lower right of screen frame. IBM and Lenovo have been good about providing service manuals on their support site but you have to hunt for them. They'll have exploded diagrams of the laptop parts as well as a listing of what they call "FRU" (field replaceable) parts. Actual part numbers vary from model to model but tend to be on the items themselves. You can buy these from Lenovo or 3rd parties that deal in laptop parts. Many, if not most, of these are harvested from dead units and resold. My guess is screen or inverter. The inverter is inexpensive and the screens are much more. You need to be handy with precision tools and a little patient to avoid causing further damage but these can be fixed in homes.
