Lenses for the Digital Rebel XT

May 11, 2006 3:54PM PDT

Hello,
I travelled to Cambodia last week and took some amazing pictures with my Canon PowerShot S2IS. Over 700 of them.
Unfortunately, my camera was stolen and now I am thinking of the Canon Digital Rebel XT - which seems to be consistent as one of the best entry-level DSLR cameras.
However, I have read that the kit lenses are "soft" and not that good.
I admit I don't know much about the technicality of removable lenses. As someone who was wholly satisfied with the S2IS, do you think I would really notice the 'imperfections' with the kit lenses?
Also, can you recommend some lenses that would work with the DRXT? I am planning on learning more about photography, but until then need to be advised by professionals or prosumers.
Thank you so much!

I don't think

Canon lense kit is bad for shooting. As the matter of fact, I saw many beautiful pictures shot by the lense kit. Much to do with the durability of lense. Any way, later, you may need more telephoto zoom lenses instead of just the lense kit.

Nonetheless, the rumor has it. I came across a link sending by a colleague working with Canon a few weeks ago. The news are as following:

Canon will later release 370D and 3000D. I'm not sure about 370D specifications, but 3000D. Canon 3000D will compete in the category of Powershot S2IS and S3IS, with DSLR equipped at the low price level. In my opinion, I think 370D will replace 350D in the upcoming months. Meanwhile, Canon 1Ds Mark II ( the current king of DSLR camera ) will also be replaced with the newer model. If I were you, I'd wait and see for the next few months. But, you may view it differently.

Good luck and choose wisely !

kit lens too soft

too many people read such and believe it. Too many people make a mountain out of a molehill regarding softness anyway. I have the Konica Minolta 5D with the 18-70 kit lens. Some say the same about it, but it produces very nice photos. In fact, I have 8 lenses, but the kit lens is the first one I grab for most occasions. If possible, try the kit lens before buying. Canon doesn't have internal anti-shake, so many owners buy the canon lenses. Tamron makes excellent aftermarket lenses in most AF mounts.

The word on the street seems to be that Tamron lenses do not

match up to Canon lenses. However, if you want to reduce your costs, they are a way to go.
