Lenovo laptop shopping

May 19, 2009 10:24PM PDT

My husband gets a discount on Lenovo computers, and I need a new laptop. Lenovo has 3 lines: Thinkpad, Ideapad and Value line. There are so many choices, and I could use some help in choosing. I need a laptop for home use, but I often connect to my work computer remotely. I use a laptop at home only because I can easily move around from sofa to table. I DO NOT travel with it, so the computer does not have to be particularly lightweight or small. I use it only for email, lots of web surfing, some document drafting, and that's about it, but sluggishness frustrates me. I've always used a trackpoint, and I'm wary about my ability to use a touchpad, but I'll give it a go if it will save hundreds of dollars. That's about it. Any suggestions?

What I mean is I need help determining which one will best meet my needs for the lowest cost. Sorry for being unclear.

Lenovo Questions

Swee2th,
the ThinkPad is the enterprise or business lineup while the IdeaPad is designed more for consumers. I would avoid any product line with Value in it unless you are budget constrained. Within the IdeaPad lineup I would probably recommend the Y series. If you do some work but mostly play and do not need the benefits of mobility then I would suggest either a 15 or 16 inch screen. The Y series will come with a Centrino or better processor which will give you plenty of processing power. If the touchpad is not your style then pick up a small mouse and presto, problem solved. Good luck and hope this helps

Has anyone ever heard of someone adjusting from a trackpoint to a touchpad? The laptop sort of ceases to be a "laptop" if you have to plug in a mouse, right?

My Lenovo
May 20, 2009 2:24AM PDT

I use a Lenovo at work (with the trackpoint or red nub in the keyboard as well as touchpad) I for one do not use the touch pad because my right thumb at some point will graze the touch pad and move the cursor while I am typing. I use the nub when I am sitting around on the couch but I carry a very small USB mouse in my notebook bag that makes my job much easier. A notebook with a mouse is still a notebook.
