Legislation that would force your camera phone to click...

Jan 26, 2009 6:17AM PST
http://news.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09%2F01%2F26%2F1846209&from=rss

"A new bill is being introduced called the Camera Phone Predator Alert Act, which would require any mobile phone containing a digital camera to sound a tone whenever a photograph is taken with the phone's camera. It would also prohibit such a phone from being equipped with a means of disabling or silencing the tone."

This is bull-hockey. if you are a predator you'll figure out a way to get around this like i dunno headphones or cutting the wire to the speakerphone. dont penalize the country cuz of a few sickos

exactly

this is meant to just "feel good" and just like any other feel good legislation there will be ways to defeate it since there are ways to disable it no matter what.

so please stop being silly and just punish those that misuse the equipment.

(plus what about areas that your taking pics like a kids play or recitle where such noise is bad, did anyone think of that?)

The noise can be embarrassing...
Jan 28, 2009 12:33AM PST

When I first got my current phone I hadn't gone through and really set everything up yet. This would include disabling the camera sound. It just wasn't first on my list of things to do.

That quickly changed when I was in the restroom at my office one day with the phone in my pocket. I had forgotten to lock the keys and the camera went off in my pocket. I had to hide in the stall until everyone was gone. Didn't want my coworkers thinking I was taking pictures in the bathroom!

I agree with the above... punish the offenders and not everyone. I think it would also be a bad thing for people who have used their cameras to capture "in the act" things and given the images to police. Would you want to snap a picture on the subway or bus of something happening that shouldn't if you would risk being noticed? It could just end up encouraging the offender to try to take your phone or worse. Just a thought...

I find that the majority of proposed legislation
Feb 14, 2009 2:36AM PST

is more about posturing for ones constituency than it is about proposing a well thought out and effective solution that is actually constitutional.

Representatives can be such cynical bottom feeders sometimes.

Representatives suck, this idea would give citizens ability to propose laws via petition and get them passes by referendum, creating effectively a fourth branch of government, the people.

Not sure if that's a good idea.
Feb 14, 2009 1:53PM PST

Mob rule and inflamed partisan politics is exactly what the representatives are playing to. Making it more of a numbers game just makes things even worse.

Most of the numbskulls to which representatives are trying to appeal are unaware that the majority does not always rule in our form of government. They do not understand the difference between a pure democracy and a republic and they find the courts to be a nuisance against the "will of the people".

Representatives
Feb 15, 2009 12:04AM PST

Do not do anything other than represent themselves. But they would still exist in this system as would the courts. It's still a republic system.

I would have to look at the details.
Feb 15, 2009 2:36AM PST

Referendums could tip the balance too much in the direction of mob rule. Laws by referendum might be OK. But those laws need to always be subject to a larger Constitution that protects the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority.

Situations such as those in California where a simple majority vote can change the Constitution by referendum is unacceptable. At that point a Constitution stands for nothing other than the passions of the day.

dumb. similar to not being able to turn off your phone GPS...

There are other ways to address predators. also, expecting perfection is a pipe-dream. however, I'm not yet sure what I would say, face to face, with a person who has had a horrific experience as a result of an encounter with a predator...

Best,
Shalin

With our new Commie president and the d3emocrat controlled politbureau, you will see a lot of things banned, like free speech if you don't AGREE with them, they'll take our guns away so we can't protect ourselves, (from them),they'll shut down any opposition to them including talk radio. Hey you voted for the butt head, now suffer the consequences of NO FREEDOM.

Like all things you can abuse something. However I'd hate to be in a position to photograph someething illegal taking place to make the world a better place, only to have the "click" end my life.

CH-CH-CH VIRGIN MOBILE!
Feb 14, 2009 1:11PM PST

LOUDMOUTH Virgin Mobile Kyocera/LG shrieks LOUDLY through the speakerphone in a female voice much louder than the ringtone every blasted time it's turned off. I'd love to put a knife through the external speaker but then it wouldn't ring or alarm anymore. Alarms won't stop going off even after pressing OK you have to cancel it while it's going off. VM thieves robbed me of $70 to boot.
Say, why aren't credit cards coated with the anti-photo like license plates or have unidirectional blinders? Why don't speeders have limiters put on their engines?

Noisy Gear
Feb 22, 2009 2:42PM PST

This thing about making mobile phone cameras making a noise when being used, if this was passed as legislation would it apply to digital cameras and especially video cameras.
Would it apply to cctv as well.
Would it belch out "Oi! Your Being Photographed or Videod or watched."
Imagine it.
