Left hand side bar appears every time I open browser?

by quests1 / December 12, 2010 10:51 PM PST

Hi all, (again) since yesterday, I have a side bar appear on my browser page on the left hand side. I open up my Hotmail account to check my mail, and most of you know that you have a right hand side bar for the adverts to appear. Well, in addition to that one, I now have a left hand side bar which stays on regardless of what web site, mail box or anything to do with web browsing. I have tried to right click it etc. but the mouse icon shows an the arrow on whatever part of the side bar you move it too. If you do the same on the right hand side, then the arrow changes to a hand which is correct. This is very strange as it only happen yesterday and I cannot get rid of it. I am using Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion DV6. Any help would be appreciated.

Side bar

Hi again quests1.

What does this browser side bar contain, and which browser is it?

IE has it's own left hand side bar which appears when you click the Favorites button, (the one with the star). If you are using IE, what happens when you open the Favorites side bar?

A screen print would be helpful. We usually upload screen prints to some image resource site like ImageShack, Photobucket, Flickr, or whatever our favorite is, then post the URL for that 'full-sized' image here.

Have any browser Add-ons been installed recently?

I use IE8 (which has been acting up now and then!) and there is nothing showing in the bar, it is just blank. When I press the favourites bar, it over-fills the blank side section (which is about 3" wide and starts under the favourites icon and drops to the bottom of the screen.) The problem is that it is not "live" as the cursor is an arrow and not the hand, which it would be if it was live. I will try and take a screen shot and upload it to my website. Once I have done that, I will get back to you with the URL. Regards.

have a look at the IE8 add-ons, (IE > Tools > Manage Add-ons), and look for any suspicious ones.

You could disable them all, restart IE and check if this sidebar has gone. If so, re-enable the add-ons one by one and test, until you find the offending add-on, then delete it if possible, or if not, just keep it disabled.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
