using a single BRAND has slowed the forums to a crawl for a dial upper such as this writer. Each page or post takes at least 20 or more seconds to come up.
feel free to go back to two brands.

Is go into the Options and in Security I changed it to 'ignore backgrounds' so I have an entirely white background now.......I'm on a satellite modem so getting the pages to load wasn't the problem. The problem was the horrific amount of yellow that comes in now that makes my eyeballs crawl into the back of my head in an attempt to hide from the assault.
I have to change it back if I travel to someplace other than the forums, but even then it's okay to leave those settings since some of those sites also have garish colors being used.
I also get to pick and choose my own links coloration for read and unread messages now and I find that much easier on my eyes as well.
I thought I would try these new settings for myself for a couple of days to see if I liked them, and I've found that I do. The small inconvenience of having to reset the backgrounds for another site, which hasn't happened often enough to be bothersome, is worth it since I spend most of my time in the CNET forums anyhow.

the speed issue??? You starband user. LOL
I'm colorblind and the "color" to me is also terrible.
you would benefit the most from changing the settings in Options, Ray.....the speed of the pages loading up is significantly faster without the color backgrounds, even on Starband. (since you are colorblind your green jealousy streak doesn't show as much as your words though lol)
I seriously think, though, that you would find a great difference in the pages loading up on dial up without the background coloring....and since you don't see them that well or correctly anyhow, I would give it a try.
Like I said before, once you change the background, you can also change the colors of the links, etc. to be what pleases you instead of the defaults.

Losing much face having to ask a female for help. LOL
[Lee, I am just kidding Toni.]
To choose ignore colors.........then the Colors button to change how you see the links displayed if you don't like what you end up with after removing the background.

Now to convince myself that I discovered it. LOL
Thanx Lady Nerd.
[just read your other post about the smilies]
in Advanced area, the animation checkmark and the sound occasionally (if I'm playing bingo, I gotta have the sound again to hear the caller lol)
Those two items also slow down pages from loading up so if you don't need them, get rid of them. The only issue with the animation one being unchecked is you can't see any .gif pictures moving including ones in Outlook Express if somebody sends one in an email signature.....some ads actually override it and manage to get through anyhow.
When I was on dial up, I never loaded animations...and then tried the sound one unchecked and didn't miss anything there either....and the pages loaded quickly.

I just tried it and I can't move in the forums, couldn't even get to make this reply to you, until I undid it.
and it's one of the first things I uncheck for each version since......I just checked to make sure SP2 didn't check it off again by default, but it's still unchecked and I don't have any problems like you are saying. However, I wonder if you have closed your browser to reset it......I would uncheck it by right clicking the IE icon on the desktop before opening IE. Then see if it took effect and stops the problem.

then went on line and things work OK.
Best tip was in the thread to zeebee [julea] that bob b made in the thread started by julea in the virus forum. That definitely made things noticeably faster.
I haven't seen you for a long time. Golly, it's great to see you here. You may not remember me; however, back in my earlier days of zdnet, you helped me lots. I got a kick out of your statement re: "the horrific amount of yellow that comes in now that makes my eyeballs crawl into the back of my head in an attempt to hide from the assault." I agree with you. I know my opinion doesn't matter ---- however, soft blue would even be better(LOL). I'm sorry to see things slow down -- I'm dial-up so you know how that goes. I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Open the Control Panel, double click on the "Internet Options" icon, in the "General" tab, click on the "Accessibility" button at the bottom right. When that loads, place a CHECK mark in the "Ignore colors specified on web pages", then click on OK.
The pages load quicker but with a white background. You may like it, maybe not, but it DOES help a little with webpage loading speed.
Hope this helps.

for me.
I haven't tried getting rid of animations again by doing it when IE is offline. Didn't work when I did it on line. Locked up movement in the forum from post to post et al.
Hi Julie,
Well, I have dialup on my computers and get almost instant response clicking on the threads/forums of CNet. Never a slowdown with this latest update of the forums. I believe I'm just as fast as DSL or cable surfing, but definately not when I want to download something.
Did you see my praise to MS for my good fortune

LOL..
JR
Hi JR ---- yes I did see this post and I left you a NT message (LOL). I figured that either Bill (Gates) or Bobby (Ewing) had definitely blessed you.
I'll ditto you on downloads being slow with dialup. I help teach classes for our local computer club (basic; internet; and email) and since I have access to the training center, I oftentimes get my downloads there since the center is on cable. There's a world of difference.
We have cable here in our area, but it's $40/mo and the co. that provides it ups their rates often. We have our TV service with them because they have the monopoly in our area. Bah humbug --- I'll never forget when I got hubby the golf channel for Father's Day one year, and in 3 mos. they placed it in another tier. Goodbye golf channel.
Anyway, I've elected to stay with dialup for now and I really do like our ISP -- their tech support is great most of the time.
See you later.

I was perfectly happy with the speed before they went to one "Brand". We all know what a brand is, correct??
for the last few days i have pages "freezing" on me...
usually it's when the citi.com.com, dw.com.com, adlog.com.com,z1.adserver or god only knows what .com there is somewhere down the line 'burps' is scrolling across the address bar and then it's all 'verkakt!'
i lose the left click and it just highlights the word in the link and i have to right click somewhere else to 'open in new window'....
*sigh*
