LED-LCD TV with Local Dimming and No Soap Opera Effect!

Aug 18, 2010 8:21AM PDT

Does anybody know if such a thing exists? I love the thin edge lit LED tvs with the local dimming feature, but the 120/240Hz refresh rate causes that terrible soap opera effect. Can anybody recommend a TV where this isnt an issue? Maybe one with refresh/dejudder settings that would minimize the problem. thanks!

That's a rather common term, nowadays. So common, in fact, that it already is in wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation

In fact, googling "soap opera effect" already gives more than 100.000 hits. So you might want to dive into it.

Soap Opera Effect Explanation
Aug 22, 2010 4:30AM PDT

Thanks, yeah its a pretty common term. Basically what it is is that the people/objects in the foreground appear to be totally disconnected with the background. I've heard it described as 'cardboard cutout figures walking in front of a green screened background.' I only notice it on newer LCD tv's. I have an old 42 inch Vizio with 60Hz refresh and 720p that does not display the effect.

Does that help clarify?
