of LED back lighting. The new Samsungs are so thin because they are only edge lit. Many others are fully backlit.
Plagiarized:
FocaLight LED backlighting differs from the simple edge LEDs of the past by creating a matrix of hundreds of LED zones, which can be controlled individually to create a far higher dynamic contrast ratio.
Edge lighting will not give anywhere near as uniform a picture as a full back panel of LED's. Also, local dimming is used on the full panels to give much better contrast ratios than was previously possible with LCD TV's. At CES, Dolby was working on something called Dolby Vision that they claim will do for video what Dolby True HD did for video. The algorithms are only to compliment local dimming and will not work with edge lighting.
