Why DivX?

I've converted movies to DivX using Toast 7. It's nice that you can do this but the quality was crummy vs. DVD. So, when it's so easy now days to burn DVDs, why spend basically the same time and effort doing a DivX disc when a DVD looks much better? Plus, as a format for archiving videos, etc., DivX seems like a risky option since it doesn't seem to follow the industry standard for video playback and finding compatible playback decks my be a problem.
